Extremists, as in lumping trump together left wing folks who want a green new deal and to actually do something about the problem?

No socialist/lefty has been elected in the US despite their ideas being super popular. Don't act like voting for a centrist dem like Biden would do anything but ever so slightly slow the climate change scenario we're in. We absolutely need and FDR new deal scope of attack on this problem.

> Marketplace and Groups are actually pretty valuable and usefu

Craigslist created a new way to sell things and built up to what it is (was?) on being usable, having enough trust, and not fucking it up. Literally anyone could replicate that and add a shiny UI to rival it if they had a giant social network to support it.

Hyperbolic analogy: it's like pinning a medal to the guy who invented the roadside billboard and completely passing over the dude who actually invented the car.

In the long run the only innovating Facebook is going to do over Craigslist is monetization, and that just sucks for users.

I became close friends with a doctor over the past couple years and she's an extremely caring and diligent person. Truly wonderful went into it for the right reasons.

By all accounts is amazing to her patients, but god the amount of work thrown at a PCP and the deluge of emails and just how little life the system gives you (at least while in residency, I guess I'll see what happens after)... like I have to imagine our care could be so much better if we weren't trying to optimize the system and had more resources.

My mom is a teacher and it's similar there, she loves kids so much and after a few decades she absolutely cannot wait to be done. She was excellent at the start of her career and got kudos from absolutely everyone but now she's just getting by until retirement because she can't take it anymore.

Gamma Ray Burst

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst :

> (GRBs) are extremely energetic events occurring in distant galaxies that represent the brightest and most powerful class of explosion in the Universe.

> The sources of most GRB are billions of light years away from Earth, implying that the explosions are both extremely energetic (a typical burst releases as much energy in a few seconds as the Sun will in its entire 10-billion-year lifetime)[11] and extremely rare (a few per galaxy per million years).

> All in all, a GRB within a few kiloparsecs, with its energy directed towards Earth, will mostly damage life by raising the UV levels during the burst itself and for a few years thereafter.

I'm guessing without an atmosphere protecting a ship it'd be a bit worse? But it's like winning a very bad lottery to get hit by one. I guess if you're traveling thousands of years in deep sleep odds get higher?

My own company had a migration from GitLab to supposedly greener pastures but at least when a self hosted gitlab server had an issue someone could figure out what was going on. Absolutely zero control over GitHub.

I guess the AI Slop is that bad in terms of increasing commits/actions/etc

> the share price returning to IPO opening not just a sign that the banks accurately estimated something

I mean who knows where it will end up by the end of the year. Meme-stock-hype train could continue or it could reasonably crash far further back down to earth.

I like how tech seems to be all about stacking more and more turtles on top of each other:

Gosh, it's hard figuring out what changes Lorne made if only we had a system to merge those changes. Enter git

Gosh it's hard figuring out what packages Rachel had to make this work. Enter rubygems/pip/npm

Gosh it's hard figuring out sync these changes across a network. Enter github

Gosh it's hard figuring out how to get those packages working on my operating system. Enter docker

Gosh centralizing our distributed version control software system onto one website is getting really unreliable. Enter fossil(?????)

If we go any further having one computer per business with a sign up sheep is starting to sound pretty fucking attractive.

One could (naively) hope that goliath corporations used their massive lobbying power for good. There was a time, long, long, ago, Google refused to operate in China because it refused to censor itself.

Since no matter how much power they have they won't behave good let's go ahead and regulate the shit out of them and tear them into tiny mangable pieces.

If we had a thousand different smaller federated platforms it would be harder for governments to impose rules on them anyways.

> Those adults who met the 150 minute a week guideline on exercise experienced a modest 8-9% reduction in cardiovascular risk

30%+ reduction from 10 hours a week of exercise sounds ideal, but 9% isn't nothing.

Honestly, yeah, fair point. There's enough money in tech to keep the party going for who knows how long.

The housing market was unsustainable for a long time and went even further up before it crashed. The smart people who called that have lost a lot of money making reasonable bets against things which should have crashed.

The difference now is rich people have positively stupid amounts of money to keep stupid things going for even stupidly longer periods of time.
