I'm an engineer and engineering leader who still writes code. I spent nearly nine years building a cloud and platform org from scratch, and I now work on security as a distinguished engineer.

I write about platform engineering and agentic software development at https://vinny.dev

On the side I ship iOS and Mac apps (GSD Task Manager, TravelTimes, PourCraft Coffee) and open source tools like Tycho and AgentMachinist. Code: https://github.com/vscarpenter

Linux user since SLS and Slackware.

How do you see this fitting with AWS’s Strands Box from last week? Box isn’t hosted compute. It’s an open-source sandbox plus a policy engine that checks shell, Python, egress, and MCP calls, and swaps credential placeholders for real secrets at the gateway. That’s the broker layer ekorondy and talkarimli are asking about.

Two questions: Could a policy layer like Box run inside your gVisor sandboxes, or would it need your full-VM tier? And on price, have you compared against AgentCore Runtime? It bills CPU only while active, which targets the same bursty pattern you’re optimizing for.

I think the Watch is a better precedent than the Apple TV. The product page already borrows its vocabulary: customizable faces, Live Activities, and “compatible third-party audio and video apps from your iPhone.” That’s how WatchKit started in 2015. Third-party Watch apps ran as extensions on the paired iPhone, went native with watchOS 2 later that year, and didn’t get an on-device App Store until watchOS 6 in 2019.

So I wouldn’t expect a HomeView App Store soon. I’d expect iPhone-hosted extensions first (widgets, Live Activities, CarPlay-style templates for audio and video), probably at WWDC. That also spares developers who are already scrambling to support the Duo.

I guess I'm not understanding the value here - to compete with Google and the likes, the scale, cost and complexity would be huge. Appreciate new entrants in an existing field but not seeing this one.
