Can confirm Astro is very very pleasant to use, and the escape hatches for when you do need something a bit more heavy hitting feel very well designed.

Oh wow this takes me back. We had very poor internet connectivity when I was growing up, so my brother and I played Sauerbraten and a handful of other games exhaustively with a crossover cable strung between our rooms.

I recently had an interview like this, and gave all my thinking in as much detail as I was able. The feedback I got back with my rejection was that they “wanted to see more of my working”.

So maybe it puts them at ease, but I think the important part is actually listening.

Fingers heal, teeth once damaged can majorly deteriorate and cause a range of complications. If you lose a finger, it's a huge impact; if you lose enough teeth it is debilitating (barring implants/dentures).

Saliva doesn't produce the acid that causes cavities, bacteria that feed on the food in your mouth do.

Look, go see a dentist or don't; but suggesting that dental care is unnecessary is reckless.

I seem to have had the opposite experience. Using Lambda (I can't speak for many of the other FaaS platforms) is so straightforward to me that there need to be some strong arguments for hosting code/containers in my projects.

My guess is that the IaC is the special sauce that's missing; you do need to go all in with some IaC solution to make using Lambda easy, but it doesn't take a lot of it to make it slick.

Cost/compute is obviously strictly worse for FaaS, but most web workloads don't _really_ need to be optimal.

This confused me for a minute too, I believe the distinction is whether bindings (.d.ts) are allowed in packages, or the library source itself is in TypeScript (.ts). I agree that NPM should enforce library source uses .js files with .d.ts sidecars.

If you enjoy The Expanse, definitely pick up The Mercy of Gods, also by James S A Corey. It, and the recent sequel (The Faith of Beasts) are some of the best sci-fi I've read in a long time.

No, just the humans.

Lots more people die in car crashes than horse accidents. Good analogy!

The question most of us are asking isn’t “is it useful”, but “is it worth it”. Engaging with these tools involves no small amount of self-debasement and long term degradation of skills; do I want to sacrifice myself on the altar of productivity?

For me the answer is still absolutely resolutely “no”.

No, these are books that aren't online, which means not only are they not contributing to the commons, they are irrevocably salting the earth (irrevocably because let's be honest, anything going into their archives isn't coming out without legal or actual violence)

Also, permitted or no, they are definitely torrenting. I would be deeply surprised if they hadn't already leeched every torrent on public trackers. The only reason they (probably) haven't depleted all the private trackers too is that they would be required to actually contribute back, which as above is never going to happen.

Yknow, aside from the books they are literally destroying while scanning
