1) There is a chance the deal is blocked by antitrust regulators, and does not close.

2) Regulatory reviews typically take 6 months to a year. There is an opportunity cost to holding shares over this time, your capital is tied up in shares, when you could instead use the money to buy US 10-year Treasuries that yield around 5%.

Assuming the deal closes at $65 in 12 months, the present value of these shares is $65 / (1 + 5%) = $61.90

The New York Times has approximately 6,000 employees, of which over 2,000 work in engineering. In the AI era, each engineer can output 5 to 10x as much as before, and there are more employees than work to be done. Hence employees work pet projects like this one, that few users are asking for.

Coming from the company that simultaneously offered six(!) different models of iPad at once, this is not unsurprising at all. From 2022 to 2024, Apple offered: Two models of iPad, an iPad mini, an iPad Air, and two models of iPad Pro (11 and 13 inch).

For Apple, product & hardware come first, marketing and positioning is secondary.

Everyone's focused on the touchscreen, but I'm seriously impressed how they managed to cut down the weight.

* For the 14-inch: 3.5 lb (1.59 kg) -> 3.0 lb (1.36 kg)

* For the 16-inch: 4.7 lb (2.13 kg) -> 4.0 lb (1.81 kg)

About 15% lighter on both models. Switching from LCD to OLED saves weight because the screen does not need a backlight and has fewer layers. They also made the laptop thinner by nearly 1 mm. But that's not enough to push the weight down by 300 grams. They must have redesigned internal components to cut weight as well.

There must have been a dedicated effort to reduce weight. Kudos to the MacBook Pro team!

Holy price increase, in 2025 the equivalent M3 Ultra (32-core CPU / 80-core GPU with 512GB of RAM) cost $9,499.

Now the equivalent M5 Ultra (36-core CPU / 80-core GPU with 512GB of RAM) is priced at $22,299.

It's largely because Amazon started Leo / Project Kuiper in the late 2010s when Jeff Bezos was still CEO of Amazon. Musk and Bezos both run rival spaceflight companies, and during this era, Musk and Bezos had multiple public spats stemming from:

1) Blue Origin & SpaceX competing for the same NASA / DoD resources.

2) Blue Origin using government processes to block / stall contracts that would go to SpaceX.

When Musk fired a number of Seattle-based Starlink execs in mid-2018, Bezos took them in to build a competing product. After Starship launched its inaugural flight and it was clear Blue was 10-15 years behind SpaceX, the rivalry died down. By then, Bezos had already stepped down as CEO of Amazon. Now Amazon Leo / Project Kuiper exists as an inherited project.

Not necessarily, they may have selected benchmarks where Terra performs relatively well compared to those models. Pretty much every model release these days just cherry-picks & highlights the benchmarks where their latest model performs best. We'll have to wait for the complete benchmark suite to have a better picture.

Both of those are trivial to do in a few lines of shell. There's no need to write or download a custom tool for this. I asked Opus to draft one up and it's just five lines long.

    #!/bin/bash
    [ "$EUID" = 0 ] || exec sudo "$0" "$@"
    pmset -a disablesleep 1
    trap exit HUP INT TERM
    trap 'pmset -a disablesleep 0; ioreg -r -k AppleClamshellState | grep -q "State\" = Yes" && pmset sleepnow' EXIT
    "${@:-read}"
How to use it:

    ./caf.sh # stay awake until you press Enter
    ./caf.sh make build # stay awake only while the command runs
Sleep is re-enabled when: the command finishes, the user presses Enter, on Ctrl-C, on SSH disconnect, or on kill (excluding SIGKILL). If the lid is closed when the command finishes, sleep is re-enabled and the Mac goes to sleep.

Why download a third-party script when this feature is built into MacOS? Just run:

    sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1
to prevent macOS from sleeping. This works even when you close the lid and are on battery power. To re-enable normal sleep again, change the 1 to a 0.

SpaceX is now GAAP profitable, and based on the current S&P 500 inclusion criteria & the rate of profit growth, they should be eligible for S&P 500 inclusion starting June 2027.

I do think this is too high of an estimate. In one of the three exclusive first-look videos the designers did with car review channels, they said the base model weighs around 1700 kg.

Though, the thruster model that does flips has a heavy in COPV in the passenger seat, additional thrusters, and carries several hundred kg of compressed nitrogen. So it may actually weigh 2300 kg fully loaded.

> BP share price was over $100 the month before the disaster

If you checked the share price via Google Finance, it's off by 2x. The share price on April 19, 2010 (a day before the disaster) was $59.48, not >$100. Google Finance is erroneously reporting the price.
