Introducing features nobody asked for with clever bs gestures, then forcing the user to undo their effect using obscure keyboard sequences or settings one has to lookup on the web is absolutely terrible UI, and something that would've never passed under Jobs' reign. It's not just the iPad windows misfeature, Mac OS' full screen mode has that problem as well. Whoever is responsible for that should seriously consider their career choices. There are PLENTY ergonomic problems to take care of, such as the error-prone keyboard entry on iOS, the Finder not showing full paths in Info details, broken window focus management (clicking a window tops ALL windows of the app), Spotlight, Expose refactored into uselessness (is it even there still?), the list goes on.

I don't think you can say that. Windows 10+ has a tablet mode that is completely detached from desktop mode, and it's a global toggle. Switching on tablet mode brings full-screen, upscaled, simplified explorer and settings, and switches off the classic desktop launcher with paper bin, shortcuts, etc. in favor of a larger "Start"-type menu launcher. What deeper and experimental integration there was in Windows 8 had just been removed as it became clear MS couldn't quite sell into the iPad/Android tablet market or compete in terms of power management. After stripping most of Windows 8 innovations, what remains is a touch keyboard, touch mouse emulation, and a few affordances in explorer to make tablets not outright terrible, with the target audience education and mbas interested in mobile powerpoint and web/mail.

>Llms are not good at web design or writing css, this art form will live on for a long time to come.

I don't want to ruin your day, but LLMs excel at CSS, thanks to the abundance of explainer articles like those on css–tricks.com. Had a bug fixed in about 10s the other week after having stared at it myself for like 10min.

SGML (ISO 8879), the markup meta-language on which HTML is based, has that, as well as many other things, such as type-checked templating.

Hence HTML as a mere vocabulary making use of SGML's facilities didn't need to define its own ad-hoc mechanism.

Btw the <?php ...> construct is also derived from SGML. In SGML terms it's a "processing instruction" rather than an "entity reference", the latter being the basic means for content inclusion.

Tried this (a CSS renderer specifically) two years ago, but the LLMs at the time weren't up to it and would either pull-in external libs or tell me "it's a very complex task" and generate a mere skeleton for a simplistic case of default layout.

I don't dare to think about the horrible output of an LLM generating COBOL with hallucinated English dropped in.

Can Golden Gate really be considered a fix release for Tahoe with its massive AI updates?

Postgres does have pg_fts (tsvector/tsquery/tsrank) which is a quite sophisticated full text search package integrated with functional indexing and query optimization. Why would I use something vibecoded that isn't part of core Postgres instead?

Yes it's bad and it'll only get worse but how about thinking positive and towards ways out of the crisis? If your problem is with social media specifically, you could join the Fediverse (Mastodon, Piefed/Lemmy and co.) which while not perfect by any means is a bit more resilient and can be used to continue participating in niche interests while avoiding tribalism, doom, and propaganda.

Having witnessed forums languishing and closing down, and attempts to open up new ones with almost nobody signing up, I wonder if the reluctance of giving away credentials is a generational thing. It seems Lemmy-style/Piefed Reddit Fediverse alternatives are faring slightly better, not universally but at least for some topics and media-affine folks, though maybe they still just mostly gain from Reddit discontinuing its API and third-party app support.

Fedi review sites (neodb/reviewdb, bookwyrm) make use of JSON-LD in a big way. Their entire data federation is based on ActivityStreams and JSON-LD, and so is the review data they get authors to share on their federation along with legacy sites such as goodreads. They're also considerate of proper RDF mappings (context namespace, RDF-friendly encoding of collections, etc.).
