There are so many CRUD and batch, and streaming apps out there that you tend to forget the other possibilities.

Google really tries to put your application in the AppEngine box, though of course you do it yourself and go with GCE. When will we get a PaaS that lets you run these big-memory apps? Or maybe you just need to be on AWS?

First rule of security: There is no perfect security. You need a multilayered strategy. Tor is a start. Anonymized OSs like Tails are another aspect. Not releasing personal info on the web -- to the extent you can do that -- is another.

Actually, you seem to be doing it right. You have the anonymous engineer listings on the one side, and the peer-to-peer recruiting tools on the other. You have as much chance as anyone of entering a positive feedback loop.

I've been following FiveYearItch for a while. I like the features that show up there, but this one is a doozy. I don't think it exists anywhere else, though to be sure there are some vaguely similar services.

Why can a pair of SF hackers do better work than a herd of govt contractors? Only the hackers saved the bacon of Obamacare after that .gov debacle

Of course you mean doing this BEFORE any interview. (After the first interview, hopefully they'd set you up with people to talk to.)

Thanks for mentioning my "Ask HN". Your site hit the nail on the head for me.

We software developers get good pay, we're not going hungry. Challenges are important, but it's not too hard to find that if you look.

It's worth looking for a job that makes you feel good as you do your work.

Thanks! That's a good list. Some are non-profits looking for volunteers, some are non-profits or for-profits looking for employees.

But I'm wondering if there is some sort of job listing or board that brings together all the salaried jobs (sorry, gotta eat), that help humanity directly in some way.

Volunteering's good. I do it. But ya gotta earn a living somehow.

And yes, biomed is a good space to do well while doing good.

Hey, here on HN we never say "You can't."

I've done the finance thing, and it's got its good side. But now, I want to see how I can help more directly. And yes, it's possible.

I've been involved in volunteer projects. Ideally, I'd like to be able to do this sort of thing all day long.

Looks good!

Jobs that help humanity should be touting it directly -- a major selling point.

I'll see what good stuff I find there.
