I took it to mean this. Nothing is more discouraging long-term than the prospect of not having any funding in the future.

In order for it to be a solution against AI it needs to also work for courses with bigger numbers.

The jack actually broke on my old xps. Changing it with an aliexpress replacement took about 15 minutes and something like 3€

So yeah, they break, but they are (or used to be?) quite cheap to fix (and this was one of the super thin 13" xps)

I'm not familiar with the German universiry system, but I think a 1 hour, 2 professors (or one professor and one PhD student) would be impossible to scale. A class of about 100 students could take an entire month! (or better, 2-months of professor-hours!)

Internet didn't disappear after the dotcom crash, but a lot of money did. This is what could happen here I think.

Three/four years of (honest) work is usually worth to publish. The result might not be high impact (and thus end up in a lower tier journal, sadly) but knowing what didn't work is also a valid output.

This is one of my favourites Internet conspiracies from those times. I'm somewhat sad conspiracy theories are not that playful anymore...

I've charged a Mac with the Switch cable, and a Switch with the Mac brick. Nowadays I charge everything with the same brick from a dell laptop from 2018.

Is it the most efficient? Probably not. Is it hurting the batteries of my devices? I guess?? I haven't noticed any issues with any device and that's 8 years now. Perhaps I've been lucky.

That's for charging. Data can be trickier, that's true, but often devices that use USB-C for serious stuff come with their own. Chargers from aliexpress-grade stuff I just discard to the drawer of the 1M-cables from where nothing will ever come out.

Usually it is obvious, but sometimes you'll find weird combinations (or surnames that are usually names) that can throw you off.

The trick (both for Portuguese and Spanish) is to treat the last two words as the family name and whatever precedes it as the name. That works fine until you find an Argentinian :P

If you read the last link you'll see he just means Apple could slash its hardware margins (if needed) and still make tons of money.

As we saw recently, they decided they are, after all, a hardware company, since they decided not to slash their margins...

I like the aur wrappers for the convenience, but if I've already limited my AUR consumption quite a bit, I think from now on all aur updates will be manual.

One thing programs like yay could do though is to tie the packages to the maintainer. If the maintainer changes, it should be treated as a completely separate package. Not a perfect solution, but could avoid a few automatic upgrades.

I think it is simpler than that. For a lot of people he's the one who "created the AI"* so he is the reason they have been fired.

That's it, I don't think much of the rest has any weight outside internet forums like this one.

*I've seen people using copilot and calling it "chatgpt".

The issue I see here is: what counts as social media? Is this site social media? Will anything with a comment box be banned? If yes, what about online newspapers? If not, how will they prevent almost-social-media sites from popping up?

How will they deal with mastodon? If I have an instance in my home server at home, do I need to check people reading my posts are over 16 or is the onus on the servers where they are logged in?

For the record, I'm totally in favour of banning social media for kids and, contrary to other people here, I think it can be done without deanonymising anyone. I just don't think it is possible. Ban facebook, x, and bluesky and tomorrow all the cool kids will be using facemagazine, y, and greensky.

I agree. This is the first time I regret updating macOs.

I hoped the .1 or .2 would fix things, but I'm still seeing glitches and even random freezes.

Microsoft is a disaster right now, but if the new intel processor can compete on battery life with mac I might go back to linux.

I find the "censorship" frame funny. This is happening because certain countries in Europe are governed by soccer oligarchs instead of big tech.

Choose your poison, I guess.
