Is it possible that he did not had a chance to go to college because he grew up in the midst of the cultural revolution? He seems a middle age man, who could be in his late teens/early twenties in the late 1960's, when for the regime any academic degree was suspicious.

The idea for a new product/company comes from a long process of experiencing situations that give you the background to create that new concept/product. Only after that process you are ready to see those "key igniting observations" that allow you to come up with something new.

Thanks _pius and d_p for your responses. I will talk to the folks of Google Ventures.

I have been following closely the development of Startup Weekend in Mexico, and wrote research paper on that. Gustavo and Melina are great :)

This is a nice set of resources. Does anyone know how is behind this initiative in Google?

I am doing my PhD research on the startup ecosystem in Mexico and it would be interested in talking with them about some of my findings.

I am in Mexico too. So either North America if you go for a geographical division, or Latin America, if you wish to characterize culturally.
