It’s a fun thought experiment, but I tend to revert to the simpler explanation:

They’re cutting off third party apps to increase their control over the user experience, to show more ads.

The relationship with OpenAI might also be a thing, but I think it’s the ad numbers they need to juice for their IPO.

What a milestone! This was the most impressive work in open source decision-making that I have ever followed (in my limited experience). People have contributed thousands of comments discussing this for over a year. It has even caused the team to rethink how discussions like this should be guided in the future beyond comments on GitHub issues. I cannot imagine how difficult it has been to manage it all, and I applaud and thank the Rust team for their hard work in fielding comments, weighing trade-offs, and ultimately making a decision in order to move the project forward.

Typically, it's expected that as a company raises more money, it will probably create more shares in the process. Even though your percentage of equity goes down, over time the company should be worth more money (hopefully).

0.2% of an $80M company is better than 1% of a $1M company.

When I consider what my own answer to that question might be, I think the "doing what I love: computers" answer is a given. It's completely obvious to me that I'll still be doing what I love in 5 years. I usually take the question to mean, "Where do you expect to progress to in 5 years?"

Surely I'll still be doing what I love, but I hope I grow to take on more responsibility. If I'm not growing in my ability, then I might just be a bad programmer, and I probably don't love it anyway.

If I answer with "perhaps leading my own team", does that mean I don't love computers? (Nope.)

I've only been following Alex since he left Twitter, but [Bank]Simple always struck me as exactly the kind of dream company I'd want to be at (never really considered myself good enough to pursue it though).

Given his previous posts regarding how much he likes Portland compared to San Francisco, I'm a little bit surprised to see him moving back to the Bay Area. Regardless, I'm excited to see what he does next and I wish him the best of luck.
