We aren't quite there yet on sentience with released models. Maybe in the labs but that's one of the criteria. We are very close though.

I think we watched the wrong TNG because the entire show Riker was clamoring for the captains chair but kept turning it down to stay with Picard. By DS9 he has his own command. Geordi gets promoted, Worf gets promoted, Troi gets promoted, even Wesley Crusher gets promoted (he wouldn't stop talking about it!).

circumventing DRM is exactly what separates breaking the law from preservation...

I think law enforcement should be barred from carrying lethal weapons.

Shot in the neck and lived. 420 years. Pretti filming peacefully and shot in the back. 0 years.

That isn’t true, you preserve the data as is for the software as is. You can emulate under it if you need to run it. This is what internet archive has done and the proper preservation of the media is in tact. In NO WAY do you ever need to convert the data back to a workable source in its original authoring program.

I think you are missing the point here. The art assets in question belong to the studio. Yes, they are painstakingly made. They are made with the assistance of some very very expensive technologies. Full body scans. Facial rigging with 180 high fps cameras. Mocap suits and props in a full blown warehouse studio. The works. It's not just a 3D model. It's a rigged 3d digital twin of an actor. There's image rights, etc that have to be negotiated and deals made. Preservation would be to preserve the data as is rather than reworking it into a blender scene.

their staff posts these things. their staff creates videos of how to rip assets from games. they are fully aware of what their users are doing and they openly encourage it.

No, it protects fossil fuel energy companies from having to retool and change.

We need to up the ante, we all know it's the Mumbai Indians. ;)

One can train a decent model at home, for a specific task but you are absolutely correct that in order to have a model that's an expert in any topic it requires training and data on all topics.
