Why just the old? I’m “young” and could benefit from an iron man suit
Comment · 23 days ago
As someone with asshole hips at a “young” age (osteoarthritis), I dream of having an exoskeleton so I can hike long distances.

Hell, give me flight while you’re at it - iron man style.

At one point I wondered if it was feasible to get into this industry myself with my prosthetic, electrical engineering, and software background

Maybe with AI assistance it’s possible, or in the alternative case it goes the “Thomas Midgely” way and cripples or maims me further

No he could have left out languages entirely. It’s not relevant for actual discussion.

A non transformer language model written from scratch is more interesting than

“I did X in Python/Rust/Flavour-of-the-month-thing”

“In Rust” man of all the cliche title baits, I hate this one the most.

Why did you choose Rust? Why does that matter?

Nothing wrong with Rust. Lots wrong with the bandwagon that “in Rust” somehow adds value.

Caveats to why I do so much - I quit my job. So,

Polishing my GitHub bio / project showcase which has landed me interviews

[0] - https://github.com/con-dog

Working on a second version of my maze solving neural network (14 byte brain, 96.5% solve rate up to 21x21 grids)

[1] - https://github.com/con-dog/tiny-neural-network

Also working on a self-editing IDE built from my “ADHD” architecture, slices

[2] - https://github.com/con-dog/slices-demo

Revisiting my first ever game and porting it as an LLM benchmark, but I worked on this for 6 months so it’s piecemeal because I needed time away from it. Oh yeah Astra, Fable, etc all lose to humans in this game. Massively. Also, 1 hour games comfortably fit in a QR code, no server in the loop.

And finally, I’m working on yet another raycasting game engine and game which is what is taking most of my focus. It has some novel concepts that I’m not yet disclosing

Look into openrouter so you aren’t tied to just Claude or codex

Thank you! Yes the maze solver has been a very fun experiment with LLMs, and code as policy is a good idea. I’m racking my brain trying to find my next thing to experiment with, but usually the ideas come to me in waves

I have ALOT of free time since quitting my job.

0) money-money-money: A sub 15Kb server-less opinionated household budgeting tool [0]. Why? Its made to be extremely compressible, so you can edit your household budget and share back and forth with your partner via short-links or QR codes. The idea is you edit your budget, send the link to other party, they can view or edit and send back to you without a server in the loop. [0]

1) slices: An alternative AI-first ADHD-friendly architecture experiment where everything you code is a "slice" with a shared event pool. A slice is a fully self contained "feature". Slices can only communicate with other slices through a shared event pool. Inspired by small-talk, vertical-slice architecture, and ADHD. I used slices to build a self-modifying IDE too. [1] [2]

2) text compression experiments: I'm experimenting with approaches to compress text in pursuit of the Hutter prize. The idea is to take the entirety of the English Wikipedia, and compress the text as small as possible whilst still being able to reproduce it. [3]

3) tiniest maze solving neural network: A write-up work in progress on a maze solver I built with heavy LLM help, managed to get a 14 byte neural network solving 96% of unseen mazes. [4] [5]

I also just quit a job, but on my own terms.

For me, I'm going to spend the next 6 months focusing on:

- Fitness and Eating right

- Baking bread

- Learning Spanish with my partner

- Travelling

- After 1 month, I'll pick up coding again - but for now my brain needs a big break. I have a few parked projects I want to revisit without the slot machine genies help

Just have a break from tech. It will still be here when you get back, look after yourself first. Just have the confidence that you will bounce back when you are ready. Thats what I'm telling myself.

If it doesn't work out, there are other careers, more to the world than computers
