It's also kinda sad that there's no clear-cut best chip, e.g. the M6 outperforms the M5 Pro in some ways (singlethreaded performance, maybe NPU and stuff) but then the M5 Pro also outperforms the M6 in some ways (multithreading, graphics). This was even worse when the Mac Studio was stuck on M3 Ultra for a while when the M5 Max was out. The M5 Max was simply better at most things and it was ironic that the fastest computer you could buy was briefly a laptop.

The saying is a little outdated, or at least it needs more nuance rather than being a hard rule.

Nowadays lenses are improving in image quality significantly, particularly in the suppression of chromatic aberrations, and sharpness across the frame in zooms and wide angle lenses. Cheap mirrorless lenses put legendary L glass to shame nowadays. A bunch of Chinese manufacturers have autofocus lenses with amazing image quality. However, the bodies are sort of plateauing with 24 MP sensors still being popular for many years.

With regards to the size and weight of lenses, Sigma also announced the most compact autofocus 50mm f/1.4 lens ever along with the FP-2, which is even smaller than their 50mm f/2 lens. It's really nice when you can just toss a full frame camera with a 50mm f/1.4 into your pocket. Of course, the autofocus is slower and there is no IBIS or EVF. But when it comes to the pareto frontier of small size versus full frame image quality, this is it.

FYI the dawn project was debunked as crackpot scammers who had their feet on the accelerator pedal to fake an "FSD crash", along with a slew of other underhanded and misleading tricks.

Yeah exactly, Valve engineers probably just told AI to make it faster.

Your "dark forest" analogy sounds reasonable but Epic's outright admission of "vibe coding" is a bit of a footgun considering how rabidly anti-AI the folks on sites like Reddit are. If they had just been like, "it's faster and supports Linux" they would be the darling of the internet.

From a hacker's perspective, yeah the feeling of accomplishment in figuring out something manually is great. But from the end user's perspective, if I get to choose between "shit ain't working" vs "it's working flawlessly but AI was involved in getting there", I'm picking the latter every single time.

Funnily enough now you can get the billion dollars from NVIDIA themselves.

World Labs is really cool. The 3D reconstruction from only a handful of frames is on another level.

* Resolution: 2560 x 2560 per eye

* Angular resolution: 32 PPD

* Field of view: 116°D, 108°H x 96°V

* Chipset: none lol plugs into your computer

* Tracking and sensors: needs base stations

* Weight: 107 g

* Passthrough: no

* Price: $959 (+$200 for eye tracking)

* needs base stations, a PC, and has a cable, and looks kinda like dorky swim goggles (but still pretty futuristic and cool)

meanwhile the Steam Frame:

This is hilarious of course but Opus 5.5 just came out and largely fixed a lot of the Claudlish.

It's kinda sad that this cool project is mired in controversy. On one hand it is kinda radioactive for a former Apple engineer to work on this, even if you worked on something else entirely while at Apple. On the other hand I really, really want proper Linux support with full GPU support on modern Macs and I feel like AI is an incredibly useful tool towards that effort.

Oh well, if this doesn't pan out, hopefully someone else will vibe code for a week and get it working in the near future.
