"Meetups" are glorified pickup activities, hookup culture is too prevalent, and people are kind of gross when they're getting drunk. I don't drink, I don't smoke. Why would I want to do any of that when I could talk online to my friends about actual nerdy stuff, instead of having to listen to someone using nerdy stuff as a "common ground" but whose interests are far more singular than that? The article says internet usage is up 90%, much of that is probably socially motivated, especially if your interests are any degree above extremely ordinary.

Having missed this era of computing growing up, I have a completely different view of Sun. I see Sun as this legendary old power that invented cool things like ZFS, zones, and lament that they sold themselves to Oracle. It shocks me to read about them making IBM-style mistakes.

I'm swimming against the current with this, but I think the role is really cool. Blessed by your own company to wear the vestments of an expert, and expected by the customer to deliver the sort of advice that will get a team "unstuck", a forward deployed engineer is in the perfect spot to prove just how much of a hotshot he or she is. Especially in fields like defense where the customer is staffed with teams that are highly risk averse. It's one of the few careers I get a bit jealous of, even though the burnout rate is probably pretty high.

I am guessing the author is either criticizing people who are anti-social (in the pop culture definition) or believes he was before and after some thinking arrived at the conclusion that antisociety was not the way. - if someone is confusing or upsetting you, assume it is your fault

- interpret others' actions in the context of your fears (this one is spot on)

- assume your assumptions are wrong and that you shouldn't even bother

- pivot conversations when someone asks you about something you actually know or are good at, it might be a trick, tell them you're dumb instead

- if you must ask questions, convince yourself you must not, just figure it out instead

- dig in your heels at no point in time whatsoever and just tell people the minimum they need to hear so they leave

- do not develop narratives or it means you will have an immediate network

- do not research the acumen or credentials of anyone

- do not grant grace to those who make mistakes, they might actually be wrong and you're not a judge

- when all hope is lost in conversation, pretend to take their side to end the conversation

- do not seek to understand anyone at all

It's as if you know me, I can feel myself panic whenever anyone asks me anything, and I end up saying completely the wrong thing as if I wasn't fully in control of my thoughts.
