That's intriguing! I was under the impression that the mains frequency varied, which is why mains hum is useful for dating recordings. It appears there is some drift (but why?), although they aim to keep the average stable over a certain period. The article states that the device primarily relies on mains frequency for timekeeping, using the crystal oscillator as a backup. I found that unexpected, though I'm not well-versed in either topic.

Apple has a decent trade-in offering through their partner, Brightstar--that is, IF you receive the amount initially quoted or AT ALL.

Any google search of "brightstar" and "scam" will bring up a seemingly unlimited number of results showing customers negative experiences with Brightstar. I've seen everything from Brightstar not responding once their device has been mailed in, receiving $0 instead of their initial quote, not receiving their device back, etc.

For me, the risk is way too high to go through with them. Does anyone have any positive and relatively pain-free experiences selling their laptops in a safe and reliable way?

My Late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" broke down last month (wouldn't start). I didn't want to go through the setup of a new laptop, so I took it to Apple store. Got a new screen, new chassis, new screen, new keyboard, new logic board (I think). Same SSD, all my data was intact.

Total cost: $700. This MacBook is 6 years old and it was totally worth it.
