You are running a financial company. Focus on that. Don’t tell people what is good to do. That’s well out of your bounds.

A lot of companies do overnight batch processing so that could have been the case here.

I’m all for mantras that give you the right mindset to achieve your goals, but I wonder whether it’s necessary or healthy to compare oneself to others.

Also, to what do you attribute the successes of those dumber people? Pure hard work?

“Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is a ubiquitously used essential supplement in cell culture media. However, there are serious scientific and ethical concerns about the use of FBS regarding its harvest and production.”

From an abstract of a research paper regarding FBS-free media.

Excellent points and completely agreed. Social media has turned the private into the public. The old adage, don’t talk politics and don’t throw stones has been completely abandoned. We used to discuss these divisive topics within the contexts in which it was appropriate to do so. Now, it’s literally everywhere.

I am not sure what the solution is. It’s a societal pandora’s box and it’s open.

I think it can happen anywhere where these sentiments are allowed to rear their heads. It only takes a few people to create this atmosphere, but if the culture of the organization turns a blind eye then this can be disproportionately detrimental to the people targeted by harassment.

Calling the lawsuit "counterproductive" is troubling as well as it almost sounds like they felt the situation was previously productive, i.e. moving in a positive direction.

I had an employee who worked two jobs during his last month with my company. He was generally unresponsive during the time and only admitted to doing this after being confronted with a lack of productivity and responsiveness. As we were winding down operations, we cut him his last check and terminated his contract. I won’t work with him again and would be hard pressed to provide a positive reference. He was someone I had previously worked with and was the first person that came to mind when I started my company so quite a bit of trust was lost in that month.

I’ll repeat what was already said. You shouldn’t hijack the back button. That is hostile to the user and will not generate sales for you. I think the idea is great and is something I can use, but I’ll pass.

To counteract the obvious sense of loss that came from an official separation from my wife, I took up sketching, first in pencil and then in pen. It’s run its course so I have slowed down quite a bit.

I am planning to take up photography next.

I take your point and agree that OP is writing from a place of privilege. His post is addressed to knowledge workers and people who could theoretically afford this type of existence. I'm sure just as Darwin was leisurely walking around, there were people working 12 hour days to ensure that he could do so.

In a case like this, management can either see the dilemma they are in or pretend it isn’t happening. If they pretend it isn’t happening then life will be very miserable for you. They will expect the same turnaround and throughput that they are used to and you will be on the hook to deliver.

If they accept the situation then they may well decide to de-risk your team. That could come from bringing someone trusted over from another team and putting them in charge or by fully outsourcing the work. In that case, you do not benefit from the upside of being the critical member in the long term.

So. I don’t think that staying the works in the long term and I think you will be facing an uphill climb in the interim as the company gets its bearings. Get the pay increase in the interim if possible.

I have a consulting gig where I pair program with my client. We do up to a four hour session before I can’t really think too much.

Unfortunately, nowadays I dont have large blocks of personal time where I also have the energy and motivation to do programming.

When I had my own company, it wasn’t uncommon for me to put in 6 hours of straight development after hours since there were no distractions.

Both AWS and shared hosting providers run on a “F you. Pay me!” model. The difference is that small hosting resellers knew they couldn’t collect on debts while Amazon knows it can.

To understand love like that is to understand an equally profound loss.
