"Every day one should at least hear one little song, read one good poem, see one fine painting and -- if at all possible -- speak a few sensible words"

I am not know for being sensible or having such words. Sometimes to enjoy life you need to take big bites.

"Would you like a smart tv that doesn't spy on you? Too bad that doesn't exist. But for the low rate of $19.95 we will rip all that out with our patented SCAAAS. No surveillance or your money back. Surveillance for our observability may be present. Terms may apply"

Everyone is on their own journey and learn when they are ready for it.

I took school seriously and went through notepads solving problems from the book. But there were others that attended after work or were there for the degree.

School for most doesn’t exist in isolation from the external world, unlike a boarding school.

> Borcherds said he currently grades on completion if a student hands in their homework.

In high school (2006) my physics teacher gave credit for handing in the homework (he checked it and handed it back, but no grade was assigned). Didn't hand in homework, you got a zero.

He knew then that if you assign grades to hw, people will cheat.

If I'm paying for Berkeley, the professor have office hours for me to ask questions.

I’d argue that education is not a problem that can be solved. Because it involves people and people learn differently and different generations learn differently.

The way to make an idea relatable today is different from 100 or 1000 years ago. The lessons may be timeless, but gaining the lesson is a personal experience.

The conclusion I currently have is that “education starts in the home”. School teaches information that everyone should know but the process starts within a household and community. So I don’t see a generalized solution for education.

When I think of how I would raise kids I turn it on it’s head and say “how would I raise me”.

The grind is fun. But some of my best day are cleaning my space, making a cup of coffee, cooking a meal staring at the wall. Sometimes it’s nice to just live life in its regular moments and not need to chase adventure to feel something.

I have the same response. In mind a dumb phone is sub $100. More feels like virtue signaling some tech stoicism.

For that money and less you can get an older smartphone and strip it down yourself if you are inclined.

Or use accessibility settings (on iOS) to make it much less appealing to stare at.

> Chrome is the new internet explorer.

My take is Safari is the new IE.

It is packaged with the OS. I can't get an older version of Safari without an older version is macOS. From a testing standpoint, this means we have a bunch of hardware or images we never update so we can test against.

That was the IE thing, it was baked into the OS. Also, trash dev tools. Crashes pretty easily with the console open for more than 30s.

For me this is a reminder of how you can't really escape technology.

Imagine being a tech luddite. Flip phone, old PC you boot every time you want to use it, no internet presence.

You got to get produce on your bike and there's none because the fucking internet. This is the type of shit that tips people over the edge and go full Kaczynski.

Or if you're like me, maniacally laugh at the absurdity of over complicating basic infra.
