> Instead, they just hand you some poorly documented loose parts in a box and tell you, “good luck” and you’re on your own to fill the gaps.

I was an Android developer 15+ years ago, and this is exactly what made me move away into backend.

Interesting that it's still like that after so much time!

Looks pretty nice, thanks I'll check this out.

I was a bit dumbfounded by the original KoReader browsing UI, I would have expected something more organized, but I thought "maybe it's just a setting I haven't discovered yet".

It looks like I need one of those instead. Will do when I have some time.

Does this support collating books of the same series together?

Thanks for the BookOrbit hint. Seems very interesting.

I see it supports audiobooks and ebooks. Do you know if there is any way for keeping sync between an audiobook and ebook?

Hmmm not really my experience, unless it's a new thing. I am still able to access it via finder. Although I need to exit KoReader first and go back to the stock UI.

As someone who thought the same (stock was enough for me) until I had some free time and switched, here are some things I'm really enjoying, in no particular order:

- Format support: EPUB, CBR/CBZ (comics, graphic novels), PDF

- Dark mode

- Fully programmable gestures and shortcuts

- Automatically syncs with my readeck instance (think readitlater/instapaper) to dowload the articles I save for example here on HN

- Calibre integration over wifi

- RSS/Atom

- Custom dictionaries

If you are into manga, there is an extension for directly downloading them on the device

I'm really happy I made the switch.

That is very cool.

Anyone knows how can I compile the latex sources into an epub?

An excellent, apolitical(*) video from Kurzgesagt about the current situation in Germany: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-gYFcVx-8Y

It explains how we got there, the problems we are facing, the problems inherent to the proposed/possible solutions, etc.

(*) as in, they really try hard to stay neutral on the topic until the end, in the clearly marked conclusions and opinion section.

Sorry I really have no idea :(

But I just tried again and now it saved it correctly.

On my first try it only showed a line of two of the main content, truncated by an ellipsis.

Quite ironically, readeck is not able to parse this article

EDIT: used the firefox extension to save it, pasting the link directly into readeck works :)

It would be really interesting to join what you and the OG article talks about:

1. Self host readdeck, add articles to it

2. Have an ebook generated automatically each article saved/day/week/etc

3. Have the ebook be automatically pushed to your jailbroken kindle with KOReader

New side project unlocked, thanks!

I may be in the same boat.

Is Fastmail an US company though?

Oh, I never gave Google Translate a chance since chatGPT came out.

Are you saying it's not anymore as bad as is was a few years ago, and it's preferrable to use that? Does it also work for English to German?

Absolutely beautiful story thank you so much for sharing.

I don't mind AI translation at all. The style comes off as a bit weird indeed, but I just took it off as a style I'm not used to because it comes from a different culture than mine. I wouldn't mind much the naysayers, I'd like to see them posting something in chinese and see how they'd like it ;)

I really enjoyed the writing style actually, all these different anectodes condensed in shorter sentences, without fluff or trying to connect them in a single narrative. Maybe this is not the correct way to put it, but I'm also not a native English speaker nor I have any classical training in writing.

Yours is the first substack I ever subscribed to and can't wait to read part two. It actually pushed me to start writing some of my childhood experiences.

Thank you again. Absolutely fascinating.
