On one level it's a shame on another exactly what you'd expect to happen given the amounts of money involved.
We had it good there for a while.
Not living in SF (or the US) and been around HN for a long time is an interesting view into how an influential part of the tech landscape thinks.
I think the number of lights is about the same at least where I live in the UK, the big change is the light is now bright white not the yellow of the older sodium vapour lights.
I kinda miss that but mostly because it wasn't as bright and is what I grew up with, you can't really argue that the white light isn't more effective at it's primary goal (illumination) though.
When your enemy is making a mistake don't interrupt them and all that jazz.
I just asked chatgpt the run time error and this was the entire thing...
> Me: is `?mixed $foobar = null` a error in PHP 8.5?
> ChatGPT: No. In PHP 8.5, this is valid: `mixed $foobar = null` mixed includes null (as well as all other PHP types), so the default value is compatible.
> Me: did you miss the ?
> ChatGPT: Yes <SmileyEmojii> — I missed the ?. ?mixed $foobar = null is an error in PHP 8.5.
If I'd invested trillions of dollars in that industry I'd be getting worried...
Also it using emojii's and words describing emotions just makes my soul shudder.
It's not that they don’t generate useful things, they can and then the next minute they smash into the wall repeatedly because the door is 3ft to the left.
Since it's stochastic by nature you never know which the answer is going to be and they are making the same kinds of mistakes they where making a couple of years ago, I'm not sure it's actually solvable with the current approach.
It should be opt in.
It should always be opt in.
Indeed, it's on by default in 8.5 and is no longer considered a non-optional extension (it's compiled in) - you can turn it off at runtime but it will be bundled, largely so they could have it on my default[1][2] and it simplifies integration of something that was universally integrated de facto before that.
It was probably due/overdue but I actually like that they are conservative with which extensions become part of the "core" and in reality almost every packaging of PHP has included it back to 5.5 and having worked on large production systems written in PHP I can't think of a single one that didn't use it it in production.
There is also FrankenPHP (and others) which negate much of that overhead (in worker mode).
While introducing other issues you do have to be careful of that would be less of an issue in "classic" mode (literally what FrankenPHP calls it).
There isn't a tonne of good info out of what you gain in the switch from nginx/php-fpm to FrankenPHP though it does seem like you do gain in some ways (but it's very application dependent).
Whether Trump is or isn't allied with Russia is immaterial if much of what he does is exactly the same as what he would do if he were.
The people debating whether he's compromised are missing the point, if he's not then there is the much more interesting question of then why has his foreign policy been to their benefit?.
I didn't say thank you and don't presume I would, Planetscale acting in their own self interest by improving postgres upstream isn't deserving of thanks, any more than Intel upstreaming a bunch of Linux kernel work is or myriad other examples.
Corporations acting in their self interest isn't worth giving thanks for, neither is the work of the people paid to do work on their behalf.
I don't expect my employer to thank me, I expect them to pay me, I don't expect users of software I was paid to write to thank me because I did it for the money not out of altruism towards those users.
