Random Acts of Senseless Violence - Jack Womack. See https://reactormag.com/randomacts/ for a great review by Jo Walton (also a great scifi author who deserves more attention).

I love the building in subnautica, I'd love something that focuses on that aspect of the game.

From that page, "use ++g instead of g++ (it’s faster)"

I've seen people say this a repeatedly when talking about "embedded" environments, but never understood why - won't it end up compiling to the same thing either way?

When I saw this post I thought it'd be a report on the very first Y Combinator Demo Day ever and where they are today.

I still think that'd be really interesting.

I have a meta-proposal. Random westerners are a terrible source of ideas - you should talk to people from developing countries and if possible go there. The local knowledge will be 100x more useful than anything we can come up with.

ooh, cool, I didn't know that was there.

My more active interest in perl was pre-git :)

Slightly self-promotion, but you can get a variety of old perl sources at http://www.etla.org/retroperl/ (collected by someone non-me, I can't remember who though)

I had thought someone had done a perl 1 release that built on modern systems, but on a quick hunt I can't find it.

So I've decided to try the experiment. Ordered a 7" android tablet - http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Best-discount-price-Free-ship... described as running ice cream sandwich from aliexpress for $57.68, with free shipping.

It's not quite $45, although it looks like I could've got that price if I didn't need shipping.

Should be interesting to see what I get and how cheaply made (or not) it is.

I used to find http://musicforhackers.com/ the perfect background to coding, but they're down, and I've never worked out another source of the sort of stuff they played.

The obvious one is that it saves you the hassle of running postfix on a self-managed VPS.

And you do get rather more than just postfix - there's webmail, IMAP, etc, all managed for you.
