Can we close the crypto experiment now? it's already proven useless, full of the worst people in the world, only used by criminals and politicians and it has already fulfilled its purpose: to justify the complications of the traditional financial system as necessary

I loved Star Trek when I was little and he was a big part of that. I loved him in Dune (the one from 1984, one of my favorite movies). He was also in Excalibur, another early obsession of mine. These are very early movies, he already had no hair, he looked pretty much the same way for 50 years. Of course he was great as professor Xavier too. Even the recent Picard series was decent even though he wasn't in his prime anymore.

I grew up with this guy. I will always remember him, his work. I will always smile when he comes on screen. And I will always keep using his facepalm meme with a smirk. Thanks Patrick Stewart.

A lot of people went into maths because they liked not only the results but the process of research and discovery. That has been taken from them. No matter how you feel about AI, I think we should all pause and at least think about this and validate those feelings.

Look at the most upvoted comment on that thread:

-----------

I feel like the point is still being missed, and it's very similar to the way software engineers are trying to cope. The argument you are making "Well yes now this part of math we will not need to do again, but now we can do this instead" however the issue with most people just don't want to do that....

Like who are we kidding, the type of nerds who were attracted to math and software were into it because we saw it as an art-form, it was a craft, it was being the only one in your city to be able to solve a complicated math problem, it was immortalizing yourself because you discovered a proof and added to the ever expanding human knowledge.

Imagine a leather workman who's life passion is making insanely high quality handbags, who takes joy in knowing everything he touches will last someone a lifetime and give them joy everytime they use it. And then not gradually, but almost overnight someone comes to his door and tells him we can make bags 50 times better than you at 1/tenth the price. But don't you worry, you can make more money overseeing the factory, or selling people on how good this bag is, and explaining that to them.

I mean, ok, that just is not what I wanted to do with my life. I never wanted to be a manager, I never wanted to be a salesman, I never wanted to be a writer. A craft I enjoy doing has been taken away from me, I should be allowed to mourn, I don't care that I can do something else since I never liked doing it in the first place. I enjoyed solving problems and writing code, I don't care if people say "well thats never what programming was about it was actually about becoming a manager all along" I never wanted to be a manager, I never wanted to manage, I never wanted to be a proof reader.

I just hate this existence.

Even in HN, I'll never cease to be amused at the amount of people who fall for Elon's smoke and mirrors.

In other news, the car is very ugly, which is the only thing that was interesting to me. They made it look like an underfed cybertruck for some reason

Listen to a few seconds but all males talk with the "next week on..." promo voice and it's super unrealistic. I need more terrible accents (like mine)

Sure sure but if I want to answer the question "is model quality a function of resources or there's something irreplaceable in the US and Chinese engineers that can't be replicated in Europe?" it's a good metric. And if the European Union or an European VC is going to decide whether to invest in AI in Europe or not, they'd probably like to know.

I would do this calculation as some measure of innovation / resources, then probably we can put this work in context a little bit better.

And if we could do innovation / red tape, I'm sure it'd auto win :)

we could even just repurpose the same office, "weights and measures" is oddly relevant

Yeah I don't get it. Why the maximalist hyperbole? AI is going to kill ALL humans! That's crazy. Why can't they warn about increased likelihood of cyberattacks or scams being easier to perpetrate like normal adults talking in public?

I don't know how to read this and not see that this is a direct accusation to OpenAI of having used the researchers data to try to front run his discovery on purpose. The evidence is not completely proven and also circumstantial but to me at least looks like a fairly suspicious situation.

I've said this before in here but Zitron is completely captured by his audience at best and a grifter at worst. A couple of months ago he was tweeting that people were crazy talking about _agents_, that they didn't _exist_ and that people talking about them were shills or bots. The responses were full of incredulous software developers saying but but but I use them every day, they're so good they're scary actually...

Zitron is just, like Dan Luu says, wrong about everything and doesn't care anymore, he's in the business of extracting money from his engagement.

I'm staff+ too. I don't need to find problems, they find me, very quickly and it's mostly a triage operation on problems from then on. I always have a list as long as my arm of problems that are worth my time.

It’s sketchy to invest in a fund they probably knew full well had terrible risk practices and was likely going under on the first drawdown.

When Leopold went to pitch NY investors they all passed and thought he was full of it. He could only convince California tech guys. Savvy finance guys saw SA for what it was (leveraged beta trade). Jane street are finance guys, not California tech bros.
