While I can understand this for muscular guys, I never got why it can also be used to mean a very curvaceous/attractive woman.

Great term. Plus the related "Politician Said a Thing!" journalism

If attackers are cheaper than defenders, the attacker might be able to bankrupt the defender, or at least temporarily deplete their supply of defenders. So not useless at all.

a) Attack missiles need to hit a stationary target, whereas the defenders need to hit a moving target. So defenders are more expensive.

b) A human defender can hunker down in a safe space and shoot at attackers. The attackers need to move and are more vulnerable

Haven't been following this debate closely, but what's the issue with "strip mining open problems"? Surely the supply of interesting mathematical problems is (in theory) infinite?

Am I correct in guessing that this is a ToS violation and could lead to getting blocked?

For some reason, Firefox thinks this article is in Portuguese.

n00b question I guess but what is the value of a standalone password manager? Seems like most browsers and operating systems offer this capability nowadays.

I think what makes Shazam magically "just work" is that they are searching for the exact embedding of the recorded version of the song - it doesn't work for a cover version, acapella, etc even if it is very similar. (Everyone would want an app that you can hum into and it will ID the song, but I guess it's a very tough problem.)

Merlin is solving the more general problem so makes sense that it's much more finicky and less accurate.

Lucky we have the counterexample of a tech company run by a guy who did a humanities PhD under Jürgen Habermas...Palantir.

I don't think Claude's writing style is peculiar, it is just that we are being flooded with it. Everything becomes stale with overuse.

"Any eighth-grade boy or girl who is 'all there' should solve it in about thirty seconds" is hyperbole (it took me a couple of minutes), but in general the public reaction to this seems like a demonstration of the Flynn effect.

Yes, except if you launch a process with nohup, then close your terminal and open a new one how do you reconnect to it? I assume there's a way to do it but I don't know how (probably someone with more unix-fu will reply), plus you can't see the previous output. Whereas with screen/tmux you can just pop it open again and see the whole session.
