The reason most engineers hate Ai (coding especially) has little to do with coding!
Unless you are 20 yo (btw, if you are you should feel lucky, you are going to smoke us all); you most likely have worked to be a dev for 5 or 10 years by now. Disgarding that is more than wasteful, its evil. Most people can’t even disgard a half finished candy bar.
Hell, i have never thought of myself as an engineer and I am suffering with what is happening. I can’t imagine what would have happened if CS was my major not just a minor. And I am not even a suit, i hate corporate. I can’t imagine how hard it is for a normal person who identified as a coder for a decade, and didn’t use the disgard feature often. No more than 2 years after i built my first business, something changed inside of me & i stopped caring so much about wasting stuff. For lots of people it would sound crazy that i would break a phone if it no longer interest me, or through away a new piece of furniture just because it takes too much space/maintenance.
Training that muscle (its actually - not +) is harder than you think. The first product i sold i still feel weird when i see it. Its very hard to move on, even for founders. If it weren’t, why would half of them spend years on stuff that are not working. Disgrading an idea, an app, a piece of furniture or an old title all hit the same muscle. The last one is harder, much harder actually, but it still in the same category as the other ones.
The truth is that with ai, people become better engineers not worst. the low level decisions are taken care of, and the differenciation boils down to system design (well, self improving design trumps that but its still early for that).
It is where someone with 15 year of experience would shine. They understand stuff that i never even thought of. If they would just let go of an old self-definition or pivot it abit, they would smoke me in a sec.
But they won’t, i know they won’t because humans don’t move on that fast.
