That's part, I think not to dissimilar from a jeep, people buy them for the "lifestyle". Plenty of people take them off road, but plenty also like the idea that they could go off road.

I'd argue that the consolidation of the chip industry in Taiwan has had the most impact here. If/When China does move to take over Taiwan the global chip supply will be devastated and countries are well in their right to want to diversify from that. If anything, POTUS statements just also solidified the point that like Taiwan, they should not rely on USA or any other country for that matter. Hence why so many countries are pushing for some level of self sustainment.

Im not too familiar with the term Glasshole, but on long dark plane rides, if I want to use my laptop I feel like a lighthouse, even with lowest screen brightness. If I look like a dork with it on while doing some light gaming or movie watching, that is an OK price to pay to not disturb others around me. But if you are talking about just general out in public, then it absolutely gives dorky vibes. On the train, or in a coffee shop or something, a laptop just looks much less conspicuous.

Is the Glasshole thing more geared towards recording people in public? This headset has 1. bad cameras but 2. a much better privacy posture than meta.

For DCS only, I wonder how this slots between a Q3 and a bigscreen beyond. The beyond with no controllers is probably about the same price all in as the 1TB, but would be better screens and lighter. If you dont care about the standalone stuff it might be another good option. The frame does bring more versatility, but at the cost of battery/weight. Wireless VR in sims is unbeatable in terms of immersion though.

If use for solely VR Gaming, and you don't care a ton about the privacy aspect, it is a hard sell against a new or used Q3. However, for myself personally I love the idea of it as a device I can tinker with and have full control over. I would love to also replace my laptop with it while traveling. Especially with a small wireless keyboard it has a good chance to replace my laptop for tinkering/gaming on the go.

With the price increases it is likely not a good value for an average person, but for myself and some other tinkerers I think it is very acceptable.

Similar experience, so i just use my garmin watch to pay. Similar compatibility as google pay, but since it runs entirely on the watch it does not check against play integrity.

Really cool work on making your own rocket motors.

I wonder why he calls it a MANPADS (Man portable Air Defense System) It does slightly resemble a Manpads, but with a GPS based guidance system it would not able to be used for air defense, even conceptually. Typically manpads would use something like an infrared/optical or radar guidance system which would run way more than $5. This does seem like a cool home made AGM-176 or similar. There's always been a side project idea in the back of my head about what the cheapest IR or laser guided RC Plane launched rocket would look like. A cheap rocket design powered by some model rocket engines that could be used for a drone -> drone intercept cheaply.

Awesome job taking a fun idea into reality. It's really impressive to see the design work

If you are referencing the size of the initial commit that's 99.9% geojson. 56k conbinis takes a lot of lines. Since I was using this as a project to learn leaflet, there is also code I copy pasted from plugin getting started sections and what not. Also some plugins were old and unmaintained so I opted to just put them statically in my assets so I could also modify them easily as needed.

Hey there I made the site about a year ago or so because I noticed around my apartment is only Lawson's, so I got curious to see and find how common those types of places are. I used ai for CSS since I can't stand it. But this was a project mostly to learn and play with leaflet

I do have the data to do that, I struggled with colors and overlap/readability. With how much interest the sites been getting this year maybe I should do a v2

Lmao I never thought I'd see a site I made pop up here, other than when I posted it maybe a year ago or so. Thanks I'm glad y'all like it :)

Do take that article with a grain of salt as it is South China morning post. While in this article they do call out that recently the CCP was ridiculing Elon for taking up too much space, in space. So I can give them some credit on that.

As for the state of these networks, G60/Qianfan had a plan of ~650 sattelites by the end of 2025, but currently sits at 108. They hope for ~1200 by the end of '27

Just before the end of the year the GuoWang constellation hit 136 of their planned 13,000.

For reference starlink has launched over 10k satellites to date with ~9,400 in active service.

Im sure the constellations will grow, but they have been experiencing the pains of scaling, especially with 1 use rockets. SCMP loves to pump up these crazy plans and massive numbers as a national pride win, even when they are not feasible or still really far off.

Hearing a $5 tier on planetscale was cool and I was thinking about using it for a future project, but those specs are just way too low to be worth it for $5/mo. I think I will just get a $5/mo vps with 32x the CPU (probably more as this is 2 x86 cpu cores vs 1/16 arm) and 8x the ram for the same price. The stats, insights and dashboards are cool, but for hobbyist projects that's too steep for the specs you get in my opinion.
