With coding (it's not really coding per se that matters imo it's more like dynamic logic writ large) it's a land grab strategy. They want to get established as the de facto standard and get a whole bunch of people on their platform so by the time they need to "get profitable" they have a captive audience, a leg-up on other labs. It's a tale as old as time, that's why ubers used to be cheaper than cost.

This post is really bringing me back! I knew talk of BeOS would stir up all us old heads. I think what we're all really nostalgic for is the days of tinkering with computers. When things lacked polish, and people put real effort into making their system nice. I remember corrupting my family computer hard drive trying to get a Linux dual-boot setup. Good times!

i've found the vision capabilities are very bad with spatial awareness/reasoning. They seem to know that certain things are in the image, but not where they are relative to each other, their relative sizes, etc.

If one were actually going to use something like this, I’d think it’d be worth implementing a little shebang script that can wrap a single-file script in the necessary boilerplate and call go run!

I'm fascinated by APL but man is it hard to get used to. I keep waiting for someone to build something like APL but sufficiently modernized as to actually be useful to me :)

This is awesome. While I agree with @oehpr on some of the details, I love the idea of marketing it specifically for the purpose of running events. Using Zoom for that seems klugey.

While I agree Medium is going through some growing pains trying to figure out a business model, I'm a bit surprised _nobody_ on this forum is coming to their defense. I personally enjoy Medium. I don't misattribute content to Medium itself. In fact, one of the things I like most about it is that I can easily find new people to "follow" (in general and their writing).

I also do post on Medium. One of the things I like most there is that comments are "first-class" posts on Medium. This is truly novel. It makes a bunch of blog posts into an interwoven globalized conversation. Certainly, that can't be done with a static site generator.

I'll certainly begin publishing to my own domain and importing rel canonical-style from now on, since there are many good points made here. But I tend to think that, while Blogger and GeoCities were simply brokers of content, Medium does quite a bit more.

Nailed it, at least for the video I watched. Rahimi's NIPS Test of Time Award was swiftly condensed into a few minutes of magic, with all the other side-commentary swept away. Amazing work! Any details on how you did it?

That's really shocking, if he hasn't already done animal studies -- definitely hadn't realized that. Certainly didn't realize it was legal, even under Russian law, even on a near-death patient.

Do you think that his intentions are ignoble? Or do you think he's simply reckless?

This seems simultaneously wonderful and horrifying -- how many deaths could be avoided if you could simply get a "body transplant" when things go south with your heart, liver, whatever? Neuroscience would gain a new level of importance for sure.

And does that bring to mind for anyone that weird movie about where you have to purchase minutes of life to stay alive? Anyway, creepy, considering how real the illicit trade in transplant organs is already.

This. Most devs I know have Macs for precisely this reason -- software, not hardware. If anything, many would prefer the hardware (diversity) offered elsewhere.

I like coding from a Mac, but running on a remote Linux box, as it's usually the deployment target.

Recently I've been doing a lot of Unity, for which I _greatly_ prefer OS X (to Windows, there is no Linux version even though it can build for it).

As a Gear VR dev I am extremely excited about this. This is a major step forward for GearVR as a platform and think it'll do a lot to promote openness among developers. Now if only we could do away with the walls on that garden...
