In 2000 I installed Steve Gibson research’s “shields up” firewall onto my Windows 98 desktop so that my home printer would stop printing random things people on the internet sent to it because it was fully publicly shared on the internet (I didn’t do that on purpose). Every website defaulted to http back then and https was to be avoided unless absolutely necessary because it was slower… a very different time!

Don’t “rand()” PRNG libraries usually seed with current UNIX time by default iF no seed is provided?

I was in a Waymo in SF a year ago that ran a red light. But there were no cars or pedestrians or anything going the other way so it was a completely safe manoeuvre (akin to running a red light at 3am in a rural area).

I was surprised that it would do that.

I’m guessing the price will be at least 8 figures. If you can afford it you can also afford the 20 acre property with the private test track where you can flip your car in front of your friends.

GitHub could have both styles pre-initialized behind the scenes, multiplex the push to both, and keep the one that doesn’t fail.

In software everything is possible.

Meh. Git 3 can still init with the old sha1 hash.

Also GitHub should auto-detect the format on the very first “git push” and handle it then. If they actually require config to be set appropriately during the initial “new repository” dialog that’s just bad ux.

As for this being a looming disaster for industry… it’s inconvenient. And lots of things will break. But we will survive and come out the other side I’m certain. We converted from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar 500 years ago. Surely we can handle this.

Reminding of my most cited academic paper… one of the co-authors was a tenured professor about to go on sabbatical and so he was happy to have a fresh paper to present at all his sabbatical tour stops. That paper picked up so many cites from him doing that! (He wrote around two paragraphs of the 30 page paper but we were still all very happy to have him basically running the paper’s marketing campaign all by himself!)

It would make more sense to complain about plants consuming sunlight than it does to complain about data centers consuming water.

Right. If you are dropping $60K on a stereo, you don't really care if the cables are $4K.

Do you want some deeply studied anthropological journal article on “The use of pagers in Lebanese society “?

Do you know of any civilians anywhere in the world that currently use pagers?

Who had the pagers and why they had the pagers is almost derivable from first principles at this point, never mind the international journalism on the subject.

SIP still has a reliability layer built on top: the humans will say “I didn’t catch that, can you repeat yourself?“ on the video call.
