This is simply incorrect, we were distributing the exact binaries signal produces.
Comment · 4 years ago
This is not correct. The trademark doesn't affect the copyright but you need both in order to publish binaries with the original name and logo in a store.

You need a copyright license to use the binary. You need a trademark license to use the trademark. See the firefox -> iceweasel kerfuffle

I don't think there is any reason for publishers to force users to download their software from the internet now that the Snap Store and Flathub exists.

I've had so many bad experiences with broken third party packages or worse, "installers".

Snap maintainer here.

Due to how the Snapcrafters publisher works, Canonical was communicating with the "wrong" person about this takedown. They've since amended their process to make sure this doesn't happen anymore. (Snapcrafters is a team of community volunteers maintaining unofficial packages)

Due to how lawyers and legal threats work, Canonical is very hesitant to publicly talk about what is going on. You can expect a thorough post-mortem after the legal issues are cleared up.

I'm the maintainer of this unofficial snap package.

Signal Snap Maintainer here, this is because of a DMCA takedown request from lawyers representing Signal. Canonical is currently working with them to clear things up.

Canonical's communication to me was initially lacking due to issues in their process, the process has been amended and I'm back in the loop again.

You can get a free premium account by linking your IEEE collabratec account to overleaf. This works even without an IEEE membership.

Overleaf. It makes it so easy to get started with LaTex, and it's easy to let others given feedback on your work.

"First to file" only describes what happens when two conflicting patent applications get discovered for something that is patentable.

Inventions that are already publicly known are not patentable because they're copies of existing ideas; not inventions.

The only exception is that in some jurisdictions, the creator of an invention can wait up to a year between making their own invention public and filing a patent for it.

Just a technical note: "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder doesn't refer to a scale from "mild" to "strong", but refers to a spectrum of symptoms/behaviors.

There is a broad spectrum of symptoms which fall under the autism spectrum. Everyone who has ASD, has a number of these symptoms but two people who both have ASD can easily have none of these symptoms in common.

In Dutch-speaking Belgium, soup used to be a staple of our diet. Every meal started with soup when I was young.

As an example: "weerhouden" in Flemish means "to be included", while in Netherlands' Dutch it means "to be excluded".

Or take "poepen" which means "to have sex" or "to take a shit" depending on which country you are in.

I frequently have to ask my friends from the Netherlands to clarify something because, even though I hear which word they're using, I have no idea what they mean because the words mean something different or are just never used that way in Flemish.

Yeah, just use flags and confuse the fuck out of multilingual countries. Belgium has Dutch, German and French as official languages. So what would a Belgian flag mean? What flag should I choose?

If I choose the flag from the Netherlands to get Dutch, I'll probably be confused by a whole bunch of terminology since the dutch of different countries differs vastly more than the English from different countries.

"People who complain about flags are nitpickers" is a perfect way to say "I grew up in a gigantic monoculture where you can drive 5 hours in any direction without encountering a different language, if you ignore the natives"
