> it seems really gross that there's an institution that exists seemingly purely to extract money from people who don't understand math.

Worse yet, there are a number of these institutions!

This is a dumb thing that HN does, certain words get stripped from titles. You can edit them back in but submitters either don't know that or just don't bother.

It's not like 1984 has a feel-good ending that's like "yes, fight the power, you will be successful and not ruin your own life quixotically."

I do think there is value in fighting the power... but 1984 is not a book that depicts such a choice working out well.

I think you actually achieved art project quite well with the amount of the concept that you completed, mainly because this writeup is hilarious.

The right policy response would be telling the firms running these programs to get fucked if they can't successfully operate while paying staff the prevailing wage that local Americans would accept.

While it is certainly now quicker and cheaper to do this, it is not clear that maintaining a copycat app as an ongoing concern has much more business value than it ever has. Take Photoshop. Pixelmator existed (acquired by Apple eventually). Photopea is still independent. What else... Sketch? Figma and Canva for the "unicorn startup" category. Procreate serving a different chunk of users. Is there room for many more new entrants in this category to gain significant marketshare? Is the ability to dupe Photoshop the actual blocker?

The Book of Job addresses this. Basically, it is God's prerogative to do whatever He wants with us. You don't have to like it, but He is still in charge.

> It is a very deeply embedded assumption that women are primary parents.

Because this is typically true, even in cases where both parents work.

It's projection on your part. The general public (excluding the "very online" subset thereof) is barely even aware of mass surveillance.
