This. No 360 hinge, no desire for a touchscreen.

You'd think Apple would understand the form factor.

Basic pre-LLM speech-to-text and a passthrough to duckduckgo would beat their current product, so...

If every semi-plausible promise of the AI vendors could be believed, every job which converts conversations into binaries could be replaced.

That's a large chunk of the software development industry, but practically nothing else.

So they promise robots, but have remarkable difficulty with even the most limited domain autonomous robots: Amazon claims to have deployed over a million robots, but is still continuously hiring in their warehouses with requirements like these:

Be 18 years or older

Understand and follow instructions in the required language

Lift up to 49 pounds

Push utility carts up to 60 pounds

Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts

Use carts, dollies, hand trucks, and other gear to move items around

Go up and down stairs (where applicable)

Maybe Amazon shouldn't have built anti-Dalek defenses into their warehouses.

Not everyone has read 1984, so it's accurate but not horrendously useful.

It's a dangerous thing which nevertheless happens every day.

So... this doesn't hurt, and can definitely help. It isn't perfect, but it cost JWZ very little to do.

Why are you arguing against it?

"he who will be his own Counsellour, shall be sure to have a Fool for his Client."

How much worse the lawyer who subcontracts Freakazoid?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freakazoid!

"Freakazoid has ... access to all of the Internet's knowledge. He cannot fly, but often runs around with his arms extended and making whooshing sounds with his mouth, pretending he is."

Pikers.

Buying the house that a Supreme Court Justice's mother lives in, that's corruption.

Clever Hans fooled lots of examiners who weren't expecting a fraud, but the facts came out when better experiments were designed. Hans couldn't count or do arithmetic, and he got the same wrong answers as his owner.

ESP fooled lots of people who were expecting frauds but had no experience in experimental design, or who were not expecting frauds and did not control for them.

... whereas I have 35 years of reading science fiction and philosophy and have come to the conclusion that AIs deserve personhood, and also that what we have today are not AIs.

It helps that I also learned about ESP, EST, NLP, short cons, long cons, Scientology, horses, cults, religions, wars, treachery, fanaticism, magic, magick, physics, scams, hypnosis, self-hypnosis, delusion, and economics.

At one point in most of our lives, we have had everything provided for us. When we wanted something, we took it or pointed at it and it was usually brought to us. Not getting a whim indulged was the most horrible thing ever, and we screamed and yelled and sulked when that gross injustice happened.

I speak of toddlerhood.

Billionaires act like toddlers because toddlers have most of the experience of being billionaires.

Most toddlers grow out of it. As far as I can tell, no billionaire who has sunk that low ever has.
