Inspired by Simon, I created my own TIL site a few months ago. https://til.codeinthehole.com/

It's built using Hugo and hosted on Github Pages. Hugo is good fit for collecting TILs as it makes it easy to create tag pages and link to related content. Source: https://github.com/codeinthehole/til/

As Simon notes, writing TILs drastically lowers the barrier to publishing something online. I see publishing in increasing sizes of granularity as a pipeline (notes → tweets → TILs → blog posts) where each prior step helps inform the next step. To paraphrase a British proverb: look after the TILs and the blog posts look after themselves.

Octopus Energy | Trading Analyst | Soho, London, UK | ONSITE, FULL TIME

About Octopus Energy:

Backed by Octopus Investments, we’re a new energy supplier for the UK. Through smart use of modern technology, we’re changing the way people consume and buy energy.

The Octopus Group has an investment portfolio worth over £7bn and with over £1.5bn invested in renewable energy generation assets. In total, Octopus owns about 40% of the UKs commercial solar generation capacity. Octopus Energy is an ambitious young business already making real change in the market, with the benefits of being a startup but with significant financial backing.

Responsibilities:

* Support with and where appropriate, own analytically complex activities such as bidding for Power Purchase Agreements for renewable generation and pricing of complex commercial supply deals

* Execute day to day energy procurement activity and develop tools to automate them – either directly (probably using Python, SQL, VBA or other appropriate methods) or by working with our Tech team. This includes:

* Using weather forecasts to produce forecasted output from renewable generation sites and forecasted customer usage

* Using forecast data and hedge position to produce trade proposals, minimising exposure to cash-out prices

* Validation of industry counterparty invoices (e.g. electricity transmission and distribution, imbalance costs, government schemes etc)

* Settlements analysis and risk reporting on meter read performance

* Produce financial position and information for use in discussion with senior management, month-end and other Group reporting.

* Assembling wholesale traded position to assist in production of month-end gross margins and forward looking financial statements

* Position exposure under different market scenarios and other risk management information

Octopus Energy | Software Engineer | Soho, London, UK | ONSITE, FULL TIME

We are a tech-focused energy supplier for the UK market and we're looking for diligent software engineers (especially with Python experience) to join us.

We're building a modern, event-driven infrastructure for interacting with both consumers (via the web, mobile and smart-meters) and the industry (eg data flows, consumption forecasting, trading on the wholesale market).

On the server-side, we mainly use Python. Our public site is powered by Django and the Django-REST-framework - we also use Pandas, Numpy and Jupyter for analysis and forecasting, and Celery for background tasks.

We use AWS heavily, employing most of the "Hashistack" (eg Packer, Consul, Terraform, Atlas) as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, http://tech.octopus.energy/2016/05/05/django-elb-health-chec...

Client-side, we use React and SASS; our mobile apps are built using React Native.

Engineering standards are high. All code is well tested and thoroughly reviewed.

This is a great opportunity for several reasons:

* We have lots of difficult design challenges to solve. The UK energy market is complicated, dated and process-heavy - there's an awful lot of domain modelling that we need to get right.

* We have difficult technical problems to solve. With the advent of smart meters, we'll soon be processing millions of meter readings a day. We need the right technology in place to handle this smoothly as well as feeding data into a machine learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption.

* There's a great opportunity for disruption in the UK energy market. The big suppliers still dominate, but are not exactly popular. The energy landscape is changing as we move to more dis-aggregated forms of generation, with less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology.

* You'll be working for a company that’s fighting climate change. We’re the largest investor in solar generation in the UK, and are funding wind and anaerobic digestion. We're helping people to use greener technology and renewable energy, all helping move the UK towards a lower carbon future

We’re looking for someone who thrives on providing alternative opinions, challenging those around them and being challenged, and owning a problem and working on their own initiative.

Our offices are in Hammersmith. We're open to some remote working but not 100% remote at this early stage of the company.
