The platforms before discord were very bad (and still are). Discord was such a god send back then simply for being reliable free voice chat for gamers.

I'm right there with you. And as I find things in reviews, I kick off sessions to setup guardrails so I hopefully never have to make the same comment twice.

Is burn out correlated to the number of tasks someone takes on at once? If you can do five tasks in parallel for 6 hours a day, I wouldn't think that would cause burn out.

Burn out is probably just correlated with the amount you overwork yourself. And just like before AI, great engineers tend to have a higher threshold for what they consider overworked.

Thinking about it a little more, the qualities that made an engineer great before AI are still very similar today, but weighed slightly differently.

Coincidentally, we also went to pyrefly in the last month or so.

With AI able to quickly solve the adoption and migration, it just became a matter of picking the best tool - pyrefly has everything and is faster than ty.

Anecdotally, I've seen a surprising number MongoDB employees applying to our job listings for the last 6-9 months (enough to feel like a trend).

If a merchant gets a lot of charge backs from a specific card issuer or acquirer, they can block them specifically. A company at Netlifx's size could be doing this, but I've heard specific instances of it happening with grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores.

It's very common for neobanks to have a high rates of fraud, but also lower negotiating leverage with merchants because they're not chase, Wells, etc.

So a specific arrangement with a specific merchant seems within the realm of normal to me.

I remember this period of Google very vividly, it felt absolutely surreal to see everything about the company immediately leaked to the press and getting insane media coverage. Younger me was very skeptical and it was hard for me to reconcile what the truth was given the broader political climate and my own anecdata that none of the women I worked with empathized with or shared the experiences of the internal activists.

At the time, I had a gutt feeling that all of the stories I read on internal threads and that the loudest voices, largely came from women in non-engineering/product roles, and this article (+book) has somewhat confirmed that for me. Even Sergei cheated on his wife with a woman in marketing in 2013.

Since the majority of Google is engineers, I believe Claire's movement ultimately failed because most of the company (again, engineers), looked to their peers and didn't see any of the systemic issues the movement espoused.

They'll all turn in to "the managerial class". That's the higher order function that requires high judgement, low frequency work (unlike developers, data entry, designers, BDRs, compliance, etc.)

Afaik, Niagra has all of that.

My favorite aspect of it is that I can remove all text and see 95% of the wall paper at all times.
