They're mostly pixie dust and magic.

It's kinda crazy, frankly, that such an ostensibly simple mechanism assembles into pretty crazy systems: websockets that scale for cheap, etc.

I know a shop that still runs an Apple ][: they have a Numerical Control machine. For those who don't know, NC is the predecessor to Computer Numerical Control, i.e. CNC machines.

They run on punch tape.

So this Apple ][ is connected to simulate the punch tape reader, and send the (I think) G-code commands to the machine. So it's now a CNC, managed by an Apple ][.

Thanks for posting this; I'm very interested in finding similar chunks of code in an AST-ish fashion, and using tree-sitter seems perfect.

I'm using playwright to do diagnosis on customer sites, and I'm wondering some things:

1) Does it have full Chrome Devtools support? Like, able to diagnose where a fetch() came from, what script sets a cookie? 2) How hard would it be to set up in an AWS Lambda (I can run Playwright without needing to run a container, which saves a lot of startup time/cost)?

Always interesting to see forward work on these kinds of tools which get used so foundationally billions of times a day.

Agreed; the frontier models have gotten remarkably good at these sorts of analyses. I write fiction using AI, and I have a very involved process of humanization (remove AI tics, etc.) including running an ensemble of AI models, and it's pretty remarkable what they turn up. Note: I always mark the works as AI generated; my goal is to have good stories, not deceive.

They have a partnership IIRC, they could pay ClickHouse like they do many others.

I'm aware; unfortunately that then leads to "must have a vendor approval" and a lot more process. If it were RDS, then it'd just be provision and done.

I just wish Amazon would offer it as an RDS DB; it'd make my life so much easier.

I'm afraid I'm in the "uses column store" and not "understands the actual storage mechanisms", but this feels like something that's essentially the same thing?

Yes, I could ask my local AI, I'm just curious if anyone here's wondering the same thing.

This is a really cool idea, and now I'm thinking about adapting this for racecars; the telemetry and live tracking possibilities seem fantastic.

I love that folks are releasing things that are privacy-first, no ads, like a gift to humanity. Thank you for this.

Could not agree with this more: with a little insulin on board, a quick walk (even 5 minutes) has a profound impact.

Calf raises are absolutely diabolical as well, if you haven't tried them. There's some lore around this that the calf muscles are better adapted to absorb glucose, I haven't dug in other than to verify they do work.

The invention of the CGM might only be second to insulin in improving the lives os T1Ds.

As a Type 1 Diabetic, I just want to say: the diabetes industry is a racket.

I have to repeatedly go to a doctor to get prescription refills for a drug that I have to self-manage. The doctor provides no input day-to-day, where a mis-dose is a death sentence (the first time I nearly put myself into a coma, doc was like "oh yeah that can happen: I can give you glucagon shots as a scrip". Thanks for the heads up!). But cool, to get the drugs that keep me alive, I have to talk to a doctor that will look at my Dexcom charts and mumble some things.

So no surprise that the ADA is a fully industry-captured organization, even though I'm certain that there are good people doing good work for the right reasons.

If it doesn't have 65,536 Motorola 1-bit processors connected in a 12-dimensional hypercube, and a stunning case designed by Tamiko Thiel, I'm out.
