"AI Safety" is too broad to be a corporate plot, but there are some demands that people make in the name of AI safety that are obviously in the interest of frontier labs, like for example for NVidia to be banned from selling to China.

> Mercator is the most-widely used projection (Google Maps uses it, for one), but it was created in 1569 during the age of exploration. It's mostly good for sea navigation. Any straight line drawn on the map represents a constant compass bearing.

It's also good for knowing how much daylight you get somewhere or whether someone there is likely to be awake right now.

> This seems to have happened in history; ideas proposed by lower status folks were less accepted until higher status folks reintroduced them

> For example, Richard Stallman’s software concept wasn’t accepted until rebranded as “open source”.

Richard Stallman graduated from Harvard and worked at MIT. If it was necessary to rebrand his ideas, it's certainly not because he wasn't elite enough.

> Semmelweis’s hand-washing was rejected until Pasteur and Lister’s reintroduction

Semmelweis’s results were already treated as obvious in britain during his lifetime, and Lister worked in that tradition.
