If you’re not willing to give up certain tools, then this is probably not the phone for you. If you’re trying to replicate another system you will be disappointed. If you were to switch to Android you’d have the same issue with iMessage, so sacrifices need to be made regardless of platform.

I will probably be using slack still from my laptop which may be unacceptable for your needs. However if Slack’s electron app runs on Linux already it may already work on the Librem 5 on release. Maybe not in fancy phone UI mode but desktop mode?

TLDR; I don’t see apps as a blocker for me personally. I’m willing to give up a certain amount of tether for privacy. I don’t expect this phone to compete with the iPhone or Android devices for market share, nor should it have to compete.

They're working on a browser, so yes... I believe PWA will be possible since they're just rebranded HTML+JS apps.

I've preordered and have no doubts in my mind that it'll be pushed back to Q4 or Q1/Q2 2020. I'm not really concerned about it releasing I think if they don't release it will be detrimental to the Purism image. Also I'm fine with the money I put down if it helps develop adaptive UI for Gnome and some better Linux driver support and nothing else. Hopefully we get a small Linux computer with a touch screen at the very least!

Yeah worst case scenario Gnome will be better off with some adaptive UI work.

It looks like the UI is coming together nicely. My only question is what battery life will look like on these phones. I'm guessing terrible for the first gen.

> On that latter one, I really don't see how they'll fix the problem.

I don't understand what the problem is exactly. There already exist phones that have the latest apps. I don't think Librem is trying to be a market leader, just build a device that's more open, so to say. The demographic isn't Google or Apple users, it's those who wish more control. They're not going to fix the app gap problem because it's not a real problem, it's a meaningless metric for phone advertisements. These videos are to demonstrate that they are working on filling the mobile usability gaps as well as building a phone that can run Linux software, not just mobile UI software.

Come again? The “Windows”-button is just a super/command key that exists on many other keyboards and OSes outside of Windows.

Or just buy a second mouse.

I see it as a combination of that and no incentive to review the code you require. We live in a “I need it to just work because everyone wants the dream of tech seemlessly working” age. This will probably become more and more common as the market opens up and the easier jobs (work?) become more and more blue collar. JS lends itself well to entry level devs that just want to write code and not understand needs or how an application works and why code is needed...and the exacerbation continues.
