Yes, I totally agree; it's not what I would qualify as open source.
Do you plan to release the training code along the research paper? What about the dataset?
In any case, it's very neat to have ML-based technique and lightweight model for such tasks!

After more than a decade without writing any C code, I'm currently reading "C Programming: A modern Approach" by K. N. King (http://www.knking.com/books/c2/) and I found it very good. I think it's a better modern alternative to the K&R.
At least you could use something less likely to appear in data as record sepator (like 0x1E)
Otherwise it's an interesting idea!
