My beloved 4Runner was made in Japan, as is the rest of them (from what I understand). One of the few models still to be made exclusively in Tahara, Aichi, that you can get in the US.

And to echo others...blame the chicken tax.

Agreed. Three years of student data leaked is pretty severe and a major FERPA violation.

I've been to several DefCon events over the years. Ham radio is essentially ubiquitous there, even with a dedicated frequency for the event for hams (and lots of 'look-the-other-way' use during the weekend).

When I think about 'minimal' and 'phone', $600 USD isn't the number that makes sense to me.

Yeah, I think you might be right. I was also thinking that it could be a weird setup of Moltbook-style LLM training?

"If I hand you a equation to solve, and you type in the numbers, hit enter on your programmatic calculator, and write down Texas Instruments' answer, you are definitely not dong math." <-- would have been my teachers' attitude too.

Throw in "and when the batteries in your calculator die, you'll need to know how to do it by hand!" for good measure. :-)

I jest...

When I was in high school, graphing calculators were pretty new. New enough that most teachers had not yet encountered them.

I was a pretty nerdy kid even then, and I saw graphing calculator as 'portable computer' in 1993! So, of course I wanted one.

When our teachers found about them, they banned the use of graphing calculators, some teachers going so far as to only allowing 'four-bangers' (a basic one) for classes lower than Trig (I never got to Calc in high school).

Funny, but your statement reminded me of what one of math teachers used to say: "If you use a graphing calculator, you aren't doing math." It seems really quaint today.

So weird. #00FFCC has been my terminal font color for nearly two decades now. Love the color and had no idea about the ‘imaginary’ color Olo.

100% agreed.

Once you get over the hump of "I don't need to be notified of everything" and start pairing down the notifications, I find that most of the time I can put my phone down and just get the right notifications on my watch.

When I need to respond to something, that's when I grab my phone (or laptop).

Because the whole goal is not to help us.

It’s to train their AI models. You hate it and then fix it. AI gets “better”.

I mean, they do go well together.

As a Sicilian and university computer science lecturer, I can say that hand gestures are my primary way of communicating concepts.

So much so that the old joke holds true. How do you stop an Italian from talking? Tell them to sit on their hands.

Wow. Did not expect this when I logged in to HN today. It's 1998 all over again for me. :)
