Years ago there were frequent crashes (kernel panics) i could directly relate to IntelliJ (PHPStorm, etc), so it might sound dull but upgrading to the latest versions is the first thing I’d check. In this case even a manual check on their website instead of relying on the auto updater to work.

The “on-device AI” with the standard M6 seems to be slightly faster than the M1 Max of five years ago. All the rest seems to more or less match. Hope the M7 Max is yet another leap that serves many users for years to come.

The M1 Max MacBook with 64 gigabytes is still a great machine and fairly affordable on the second-hand market.

(Returning an i9 to wait a few more years on the M1, any M1, was absolutely worth it)

Pokémon cards do not have security features. They can easily be copied by any two-bit counterfeiter.

Also, the Pokémon Company can print as many as they like.

Seeing high value in them seems like a risky investment to me.

Thanks, it partially works as some sites are wide. Great selection of sites :)

You and I, my friend, are the only ones in this thread not being sent to work in the glitter mines of south Arkansas as enemies of God's Country. SI has the best names, other intelligence is vastly inferior, using it is worse than many schisms of -isms combined.

Please don’t sign up with burner accounts for one snarky reply: take responsibility for your words. You could also respond with something nice that inspires the author and other readers.

Provide food for critical thinking instead of accusing people of not being critical thinkers.

For example, tell us what new media from the US is actually great today. What do the arts offer that is next level and worth watching? Is there a rise in arts in other counties that we are missing? What could Facebook boomers need that leads to more and higher quality arts and movies?

Feedback: doesn’t work here. Swiping barely works on an iPhone 11. Swiping with one hand with the left thumb on the left part of the screen does not work at all. Swiping in the horizontal center from right to left can take some time and sometimes does two swipes. If I swipe back I might swipe back in safari and land on hacker news again. Hope this helps, would like to try :)

“Looker is Google Cloud agentic business intelligence and embedded analytics platform.”

Something of the past according to the author.

> Pace makers, dialysis machines, brake lines.

That’s fair, including insulin pumps over Bluetooth with known vulnerabilities. Many vulnerabilities might be fixed or formally verified if they are part of the architecture.

> Do you know how elevators work now? Their safety mechanisms? Planes are 10x more likely to cause death.

Both rely on inspections, routine maintenance, procedures, and fail-safe hardware afaik. Just like climbing gear.

Would formally verified software add anything? For example, could it cut the need for inspections or software maintenance? I think neither is going to change.

But what might change is that the specific spelling error on an elevator display is formally verified. It becomes about coziness with impressive amounts of paperwork that only a few people can understand.

Just changing one statement requires new verification, which is why formally verified code currently is not touched but ported verbatim into new projects and “rewrites”. That cost may decrease, which is nice but also not nice: the systems you currently want to formally verify are systems you might not want to alter without high friction in the first place.

I’m hopeful it will produce more robust software, and I’m by no means against it, but I’m skeptical of producing more when we might want to produce less.

Code needs to run on physical devices, which are prone to undervolting, bit flips, hardware bugs in specific batches, radiation, deterioration, and the like.

Preferably, I wouldn’t trust my life to a calculating device running on AA batteries while dangling from a rope.

Did I accidentally make you a ton of money on one of the betting apps? :)

Thanks for the reply. Maybe it’s an iOS or version thing.

Just to document my experience with the DarkReader solution in this thread:

After using DarkReader for a day, I find it to be an unsatisfying solution. Not only does it mangle the HN UI, but worse, it shows the light interface for 5 to 10 seconds before switching to dark. Every time. This just partially solve reading HN at night.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Just bought and installed it as an iOS extension :) All themes and all custom themes remove the upvote button. Does it do the same for you?
