I also want to highlight Chatto here: https://chatto.run/ Very lightweight and self-hostable. Not e2ee, though.

as fun as that sounds, my experience has been the polar opposite. if I let my mind drift, it's going to get cheap dopamine kicks from stupid YouTube videos all day.

You have an army of behavioral psychologists at Alphabet and Meta working against you; it's only fair to fight back.

I was going to give credit to the direction Mozilla was taking here after their... questionable decisions in the past few year(s).

Only to see that this is neither generally available, nor can you use it without enabling telemetry. I don't know who makes these decisions inside Mozilla, but I just don't get it.

The thing that stands out to me with all of this is how little accountability there is left within the field.

Published a rip-off? "Sorry, Claude must have done this".

Published a shitty/wrong/insensitive/<insert other adjectives here> post somewhere? "Sorry, the AI wrote it"

Regardless of how we view LLMs as a whole, if you produce content with AI and publish it, you personally own every line of what you published. "Claude did it" cannot ever be a valid excuse.

My biggest issue with elevators is that some places and hotels I‘ve been to use disconnected systems:

They have three elevators, but pressing one button only calls that specific elevator. So everyone presses all three buttons, meaning the three elevators basically turn into one.

I don‘t understand how this was ever signed off, but I‘ve seen it multiple times now...

of course you exist regardless of what you are doing. I think the term is just used because it is the most "plain" form of existing? Just being around and doing nothing else at all. I'm not sure the term used carries much weight.

Keen to hear other recommendations. My DELL screen is working quite nicely but has weird burn in problems when connected through a Thunderbolt dock. What other brands (apart from the insanely priced Apple screens) still make high quality, reputable screens?

But Kimi (at least say) will release their weights. So surely, if their prices are too high, somebody else will host it cheaper?

Seems like it, but since you can self host it, you still get a lot more control over the data than using one of the aforementioned hosted offerings

Super cool, especially that the code is annotated!

In case the author is reading: The decorative feather images are between 2MB to almost 5MB in size. Compression might be in order to save users time and bandwidth, and make the site look less broken while the images are partially loaded :)

It has simply become a "marker" for LLM style, so I'd argue authors caring about their text will now just use a different structure to get the meaning across. That's just part of being a writer. You can choose to write it, and it'll be correct, readers (including me) will just conclude its most likely an LLM and often stop reading.

Encryption at rest means they have the key. End to end means they don‘t. Huge difference!

And yet other people rely on it doing exactly the opposite. Aside from whether this behavior is useful, it is never warranted to change such an important thing unannounced.
