Got it. If you want to self-host again at some point you could add a VPN layer and configure unattended-upgrades with automatic reboots. With an Ubuntu Pro subscription (free for up to 5 personal devices) you can even get kernel live patching. Once that's taken care of you can automate the app updates with systemd timers / cronjobs and small scripts.

Not the case for me.

I might have jumped the gun a bit with that take, sorry. Which new challenges came up that made you feel ill-equipped to continue self-hosting?

> So, do you actually want a router that you can buy with DD-WRT pre-installed?

No, I'd rather flash it myself and use OpenWrt instead of DD-WRT.

It's fine if you don't want to manage your self-hosted stuff anymore but implying that self-hosting is dead now because of LLMs is doomerism.

> I’m disappointed in the level of groupthink reflexive cynicism I see from commenters any time prominent AI leaders talk about AI risks and the need for regulation or pacing.

Maybe it's not "groupthink reflexive cynicism" if you feel the need to address the obvious conflict of interest of the AI leaders in each of your paragraphs. Why did they launch this coordinated AI safety campaign, starting with Jacob Coxon's tweet?

> [...] but tons of people on all sides with all motivations [...] all seem to agree there are real, existential risks here [...]

Are you talking about the Jacob Coxon story and the people that came out agreeing with his post? It was a well coordinated campaign, not a genuine grassroots development.

I think he's going through a breakup.
