It is however much much more useful for Google from a business perspective.
Lower openrates mean less eyeballs and revenue, which will in turn translate into more adwords and display placements. Obviously not directly, and probably not in most cases, but it should, even if it's only a few percent or less, translate into more revenue for Google. How much is anybody's guess.
If I were an E-Mail marketer or a big brand though, I'd be furious and try any other channels but Google's. In my eyes, it smells like Google using its market power to bully their own customers. They pulled a classic Facebook with this one ;)
oh hey, at least they have olark :)
Whatever his wild prediction of the future is - it sure sounds a lot like twitter. Maybe a more "leanback" version of it? Better self-control over the algorithm (actually a good idea.., but wouldn't it be a lot easier if twitter just did that? Or app.net?) Did the weird stuff he's having let him sleep through twitter? Is he counting on twitter being too reliant on the control of the feed for monetization reasons? That's risky, but bold.
Or can someone explain this to me?
From what I've read so far it certainly does require power and doesn't jumpstart itself. Question is how much power does it need, and how much is it able to generate. Maybe not their simple experiment one, but an industrially optimized one.
Still looks like sth that has already been tried and the math just doesn't work, yet it's remarkable that these young girls are working on these problems. It shows what education can do and impressed me nontheless.
Btw, quick bug report: doesn't work for me if open in non-active tab in Chrome 22.0.1229.94 on Mac OS X 10.8.
Good fun and now do an automated version where ppl can paste their youtube links. Greetings, lx
