Replace every instance of "PRC" with "U.S.", DeepSeek with OpenAI/Anthropic, and replace "U.S." with any other nation, and maybe remove the last sentence. How does it sound now? Both nations may as well just say it - "we're banning it because they're our closest competitor".

My grandfather was a musician. I appreciate the skill and dedication to the craft he had. Today, I sometimes listen to AI-generated music on YouTube, and to be honest I enjoy it. I also enjoy AI-generated art. That doesn't mean I think the world will be improved by the advancement of this field.. I have no strong opinion either way, mainly because I just don't have a clue how it will play out. I don't think a society where everyone is a trades-person is very interesting (no offense to trades people), nor do I think it's a solution.

I don't see the point in sticking one's head in the sand and pretending AI doesn't exist. The one distinguishing feature of humans is our intelligence, and we are so intelligent that we are in the process of creating super intelligent beings that (once robotics has advanced enough) have superior physical traits as well, and would be able to repair/maintain themselves to extend their lives indefinitely. Once we have done that, which seems at least plausible to me, I think we will all have an existential crisis. On earth, we treat other species as though they are at our disposal, and only leave them be if it does not cost us much. I wonder if these beings we create will feel similarly about us.

It must be tiresome to be a student these days… with each teacher having different pet theories about AI use and sometimes trying to “trick” students who use AI, or implement some draconian rules about the way homework or exams must be done. It’s tiresome for you, but just imagine getting varying lectures on AI use as you go from class to class as a student. Must be hell

I’ll just leave this here… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_response_to_Hurricane...

“ One of the first things Canada did was to deploy Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue to Louisiana... the team started operations on September 3; they saved 30 people that day. They were the first outside responders to arrive in St. Bernard Parish, beating American response teams.[4] By the time they returned to Vancouver on September 6, they had reportedly saved over 110 people.”

Canadians are disgusted by the way we’re being treated by the US.

So, kind of like buying a lotto ticket.

“limited downside” is not necessarily true. You could waste a lot of time, worsening relationships or just missing out on time you could have spent with loved ones, who will be gone someday. Spinning your wheels can have a real cost, don’t dismiss it.

This is just so, so bizarre. So I guess 15 year olds can access it after 12am (EDIT: ah, UK is banning it for those under 16, I see)? And they're going to force a bunch of companies to implement these features for everyone in this 2 year age window? What? It makes no sense... it's like someone's grandma came up with this policy in 2 mins without thinking it through.

I’ve seen a lot of your posts on HN and you seem knowledgeable and give good advice, but c’mon, divination? magic? are you sure you’re all right now? I mean no disrespect, and I’m no shrink, but I’d guess you’re maybe not out of the woods yet. I’ve had a family member with issues, being somewhat detached from reality is never good.

Sounds like a good idea. Who the hell wants to use a proprietary language?

As a Canadian, I disagree, don’t think you sound like a jerk with this comment. Makes sense to worry about local problems more than remote ones IMO. Of course I’d be more concerned about my own country’s interest rates than that of a foreign country.

Maybe they thought an investment in a product with lots of substitutes & high capital requirements wasn't very attractive.

You have some tough choices to make, that's for sure.. I have no experience with this so I might be talking rubbish. But you did say you have tattoo artist experience right? Why not try walking in to a tattoo place and offer your services? If you get the job, THEN you can start thinking about what to do about your dog. They might even be cool about it and let you keep the dog in the shop or just outside.

It makes most people depressed to do a job they don't like, frankly. Do it with a goal in mind - saving funds you might need for marketing your OS, cashing cheques so you can buy food, getting out of the tent.. etc. Accept it as a (hopefully) temporary situation, like a long layover between trips. I think you ought to be more realistic though.

I'm going to try to provide what I think is the most practical advice I could give, because I don't think you're being realistic. You are at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs right now. You need proper shelter, food etc. You need to get yourself above the second level ("safety needs") before spending time on highfalutin efforts like monetizing an OS or trying to get angel investors to swoop in and save you. I think you should try to get a job unrelated to IT (since the job market sucks), perhaps as a tattoo artist since you have experience in that? Get yourself and your dog out of the tent and safe first. Good luck to you.
