I realize that this kind of remark is better-intentioned than it comes across on the internet. In personal conversation it can be just another way of chatting and making sense of the world. Tone of voice can do a lot to modulate pejoratives.
But in an online forum like HN it degrades and makes conversation more shallow, and tends to evoke worse from others, leading to downward-spiral-mode, which we're trying to avoid here.
