I don't care about the touch screen, but I am curious about the display quality difference between mini-LED and OLED. What's the advantage? I see it's a brighter display and with higher contrast and Adobe RGB palate. I use a Macbook Pro M1, so I'd expect a slightly brighter screen and some better blacks? Is that about it?

So this is what it feels like to enter a world of financial anxiety due to AI-enabled attacks against banks. No idea as to what caused the service outage, but I've felt like it's just a matter of time before AI was used to try to breach a financial institution, which just so happens to hold a lot of my money.

I’d take it one step further and say they deserve to have their rights respected as well and the outcome pursued by law to reinforce the ethics undergirding law. It seems like this person was a target and they would have eventually got him — this was simply an expedient shortcut.

In the pour-over section, the authors hit on a good point about height and creating a vortex in the slurry. Water temperature and flow rate are important variables too. Combined with the coffee grounds' quality (i.e. grind consistency) and whether it has fines or lots of chaff will also dictate how long it takes to draw down and therefore whether the pour height's effects will change if static.

I do like the advice grind coarser and extract with more water -- that's made my V60 coffee quality fairly consistent, but everyone's mileage will vary based on how they like their coffee and the roast profile.

There are so many other variables that didn't get a mention: Coffee varietal

Water hardness (and even which other ions are present in the water) and its effects on acids and other compounds that highlight certain varietal's defining characteristics.

Vessel temperatures.

The filters used (materials, paper thinness).

Pouring patterns (circular, concentric, hypotrochoid, more?)

The filter shape and material.

Even the grinder used conical vs. flat burrs and high RPMs vs. low RPMs creates palpable flavor profile differences.

The rabbit hole goes deep and continues to expand.

Imagine being so intelligent to do so many things with a skill set, yet choosing to spend so much time on an animation that can be measured in microseconds. The proportions are staggering. Truly bizarre to me how something I’ve never even noticed while using the feature could drive a person to this level of obsession.

Finally got my $45 payout from the last class action suit against Apple for the butterfly keyboard fiasco. Seems like Apple didn’t learn the overarching lesson here: keyboards have to be robust and replaceable because they frequently need replacement.

Apparently OpenAI has zero interest in private user data. I have a hard time understanding how they’ll deploy this defense of “what about private user data?” in court.

At least with medicine there are ethics and operating principles and very strict protocols. The first among them is ‘do no harm.’

It’s not reassuring to me that these companies, bursting at the seams with so much cash that they’re actually are having national economic impact, are flying blind and there’s no institution to help correct course and prevent this hurdling mass from crashing into society and setting it ablaze.

It’s not worth much if a human has to fact check the AI and update it to tell it to “forget” certain precepts.

Except they aren’t merely reading and reciting content, are they? That’s a rather disingenuous argument to make. All these AI companies are high on billions in investment and think they can run roughshod over all rules in the sprint towards monetizing their services.

Make no mistake, they’re seeking to exploit the contents of that material for profits that are orders of magnitude larger than what any shady pirated-material reseller would make. The world looks the other way because these companies are “visionary” and “transformational.”

Maybe they are, and maybe they should even have a right to these buried works, but what gives them the right to rip up the rule book and (in all likelihood) suffer no repercussions in an act tantamount to grand theft?

There’s certainly an argument to be had about whether this form of research and training is a moral good and beneficial to society. My first impression is that the companies are too opaque in how they use and retain these files, albeit for some legitimate reasons, but nevertheless the archival achievements are hidden from the public, so all that’s left is profit for the company on the backs of all these other authors.
