Honestly losing the will over here; I Degoogled and moved to Proton a couple of years ago because they seemed to be a cool company aligned with my values. Is this coming from a “the business is failing and we need to ship faster to stay competitive” angle or is he just a massive ball bag? I mean either way he’s probably a massive ball bag but if he’s trying to save a sinking ship it’s at least somewhat understandable. Otoh if he’s just a massive greedy ball bag then I don’t even know where I go next.

You said what I was thinking. If anyone has links for _hacker_ news drop them here ;)

I feel it’s important to point out that the word “value” has different meanings to different people.

I think that the value of hand written code has gone up, and will continue to do so, as a direct consequence of anyone now being able to generate code with LLMs.

That’s how I feel, in any case. Win my heart with a euphoric 3am commit message, typos left in.

Really appreciate the time taken to dig into this with solid improvements to boot, great work

Many native web browser capabilities exist because adventurous developers came up with the patterns themselves. There is no way we’d have CSS scroll-driven animations available to us if front end developers hadn’t already established the requirement and pattern. Browser standards, CSS specs etc follow what _we_ hack together and make ubiquitous (sort of like desire paths), not the other way around. That is why we shouldn’t blindly “use the platform”; vendors should adjust to our demands, not the other way around. Of course, if a native element or capability matches exactly your requirements in some scenario, using it would be sensible.

Exactly what I thought, maybe we need to get out more

I try to do more and more in the terminal, but even that isn’t immune to the same syndrome, programs tying up tons of threads and memory, terminal emulators themselves being GPU accelerated and performance intensive. Perhaps we will see a cultural hard fork and a trend towards small, simple, utilitarian programs in personal computing; if the price of basic components continues its upward trend, it may even be necessary. Devices that are purposefully limited, hacked, owned, customised, privvy to closed networks that follow the same philosophies.

What interests me is what the “stink” looks like and feels like to you and why you find it so off putting. Let’s get into the weeds. I realise I sound like a therapist.

I really, really wish that posts like this would give _specific examples_ of generated code they thought was sub par and what they did to remedy it. It’s not that I don’t believe that they found the output lacking in some way, it’s more that I read the post thinking, “I feel like Claude et al are way better programmers than me but this person is saying they’re more skilled, I’d love to see what their specific issues with generated code were and how they fixed them”. I mean, even one or two short examples would be amazing; without them I just come away with so many questions.

I came to say thanks for the link to sgnt.ai on Jev, then realised you're the author! Well, thank you so much, I feel informed :)

I don't understand how this is different from oai "structured output" (and whatever the similar paradigm was on Sonnet ~3.7 back then) which everyone moved on from. On their gh they say:

"Jev is TypeSafe's closed service for runtime-defined semantic decisions. This project reproduces that interface pattern with open models; it does not reproduce Jev's undisclosed model or training"

As someone else pointed out it isn't actually Jev... can someone enlighten me

Yes the site seems to be all surface level marketing with no detail to be found, not a great sign

I’d say it’s a pretty big differentiator

I would like more information on what Degoogled means and whether it’s still possible to install 3rd party apps by some other means. Nice looking device, I expected it to cost more. Also, does this only work in the US rn?

Since you can’t run Graphene on non pixel devices, this seems like a big feature
