wait, is this a thing?

firefox is the only mainstream browser with an rcfile, that alone gives you incredible powers. I hope one day it also grows something like chrome's CDP. What is everyone so upset about?

Wait, is this a thing?

Why do people hate firefox? It's the only mainstream browser with an rcfile?

TUIs work where I do. I don't want to juggle another window unless I need to. Tmux gives me better ways of organizing my work than most display managers. Most of the useful things I do end up calling other shell commands, and it's nice having terminal right there. Ctrl-t / fg are also uniquely powerful.

UIs are also useful for information that is best represented in a UI. keep using those too.

You can bend each to be more similar to the other, and that's good too! Sometimes there is a good use case for that.

Agreed.

"Code was never the hard part" is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Making something work, has always been easier than making something someone can read. AIs also, seem to benefit from clean abstractions, appropriate code reuse, etc. (coincidentally, the thing they suck most at).

It's the same thing with english, except that english doesn't have a compiler. Comprehension is the only measure of communication if you're talking about a human language. Programming shares the same goal. Both, often also need to do something else useful. Programming, and lawyering, have a lot more in common than people think.

We're creating a culture of sh*tting on codebases so the highest paid execs can cash out when things get tough. It isn't a new phenomenon, but it's one we'll need to endure until enough people lose enough money that the accountants start taking notice and start saying "you should be more careful, or you'll lose your shirt". In the interim, the people that care are working insane hours to try to protect the things they believe in from inevitable doom, and risking being fired to do it. There is a balance to both sides, and the jury is out on whether or not anthropic/openai/alibaba can save us from the future we are creating now with short-term goals.

This is the future I want. I will keep fighting for it. But my braveheart pinephone is showing it's age. And I need it to be dependable for pagerduty etc, or else have some other alerts proxy capable of waking me up in the dead of night.

I agree with this article, but it's so much more than just trust in a workflow. It's an API you can trust, in an ocean of change. That's what you're choosing; an api, abi... whatever you call it. You're committing to an extensible boundary. And both the boundary, and the extensibility (not to mention the openness) are why they win.

And shelling out to a cli? That's a pretty damn compelling and composable boundary, IMO.

I appreciate the mysql/mariadb comparison.

This is the nerdiest thing I've ever seen, and I absolutely adore it.

This is really smart. It’s low friction. It’s a drag to need two devices, but it is a low compromise bridge to building up something like a pinephone/pinebook’s ecosystem without needing to keep swapping your sim card.

> I have no idea what I’m doing and still made money from it

I feel like this describes most people that start their own business at first. It just usually isn’t a lack of experience in producing the product. It’s a constant tradeoff of what skill to invest more time into to keep it afloat. They’ll learn sooner or later.

Without a horse in this race, this precedent makes me deeply uncomfortable.

The super mario bros movie, 1993. I’ll die on this hill

Lol, I don’t think so, at least not outside branding and corporate circles.

It can still be endearing to have quirks, but I think there is still value in awareness of yourself and your patterns.
