Yeah I suspect the “average Tina” will have a top out on usage. Almost the same way that the average house only needs so much electricity before there’s not much more wiring up to do. Only so many lamps and TVs the average house needs.

But corporations? Government? Universities? Militaries? Biomedical research? I suspect the ceiling on their consumption of intelligence is much much higher than Tina’s.

And I think the counterpoint here would be: Will there ever be enough intelligence or will we just want and use as much as we can possibly build?

Is intelligence like for example food where if I get my daily calories I’m good? Or is there no limit to the demand for intelligence. If there’s more available, will we just keep using more? Forever? It can’t be limitless right?

But where’s the limit because right now we’re consuming every GPU hour we can.

I recommend looking at any data regarding A100 rents (6 year old GPU) and then save 50 minutes of your time.

This is not just a Mac-specific thing. On a lot (dare I say most?) Windows devices if you upgrade the screen (OLED, higher res, high refresh etc) it generally also comes along with touch whether you want it to or not.

There’s only so many levels of customization manufacturers are willing or able to offer.

And nicer new screens cost more money!

You don’t have to touch it?

They sell other equally capable MacBook pros if this isn’t your use case?

Just look at the reviews on the Amazon page for the LG in question man. It’s got like a 3 out of 5.

Apple sells millions of these displays I did not say you wouldn’t be able to find a Reddit thread with some problems.

“But ackshully” — you fully understand the point I was making!

What you’re paying for with an Apple branded monitor is effectively opting out of the panel lottery.

Look at the reviews for that LG. Sure the specs on the tin are better but quality control looks like garbage.

Apple does not accept that. I have never got a bad Apple screen in any Apple product I have ever bought. Not the case from other companies.

It was always a very stupid line of attack but it has unfortunately now become part of the narrative.

I think I have plenty of empathy. I just don't yearn for the guillotine for anyone, even our most wealthy, though I do support reforms to make them pay more, and allow the average working person to better afford life's necessities.

My point was that this all feels a bit rich on a forum with mostly well todo software engineers. You are not an exploited victim if you are making a high income working a white collar job in a comfortable glass tower, and the worst thing that ever happens to you is the occasional off-hour page.

You're right, my full-throated endorsement of the US healthcare system went too far.

Wait a second-- I didn't do that at all.

Every once in a while I feel this -- "yeah we're being exploited!"

And then I remember that basic living has always had a cost to be paid. I doubt the first hunter gatherers sat around wondering if they were fulfilled. They just had a more immediate sight-line from their labor to their actual living costs.

Most of us here work well-paid jobs that allow us to pay our requirements and still have disposable income to enjoy our lives. But work we must; homes aren't free and neither is food and much of the entertainment we enjoy.

I don't feel particularly exploited. I fear if you do whatever menacing thing you're insinuating you want to do to the "exploiter class" then my job will go away and much of my lifestyle with it. Not sure that's a good outcome for anyone, really.

No professional judgment is important.

I don’t tell the PM every single thing wrong in our code base. I bring up the things that need to be addressed.

What you personally believe and perception within the United States are not the same thing.
