Like someone else already mentioned, this is absolutely not forbidden under EU law. And even Meta's own internal documents say this is ok.

The world would be a lot better off without this industry and the tracking it relies on.

Yeah too bad regular websites and QR codes don't exist anymore. No alternative to putting everything on facebook. /s

> It’s pretty simple - the EU is unable to produce alternatives. This is because they don’t have the software talent for it.

Honestly, that's not true. Anyone can make a facebook/instagram/whatsapp alternative and the world is full of them. Anyone can even install mastodon and set up their own social network, as America's president has even done: https://www.pcmag.com/news/trumps-social-media-site-quietly-... so it doesn't even require 'software talent'.

What American companies succeeded at was marketing and growth hacking, some of their techniques used are illegal in the EU but they used their network effect of being massive in the US to gain a foothold here. But this has nothing to do with software engineering. Even in the time of facebook's rise Europe was full of competing social networks like hyves.

> Any talent they do have immediately runs for the SF Bay Area of the United States at the first opportunity.

Only those who care about raw salary over everything else. Quality of life, welfare and cost of living is much higher in the EU. The cost of life is huge in silicon valley and that's more a reason why salaries are so high; otherwise people just wouldn't be able to live there.

Edit: I see your edit, yes employers in the US provide free healthcare but only as long as you work there, and you can be fired at any moment and have to pay top dollar suddenly. Not cool when you have a family to support. These are the welfare benefits that make the EU a much more relaxed place to live.

And the Trump administration has even tried to enforce this on other countries. For example they have threatened to ban companies promoting diversity and inclusion policies from doing business with the federal government.

> Now, we all agree feminism is an important civil rights topic and Virginia Woolf should be (and is) celebrated in the western world. But how can a platform that is explicitly not allowed to permit advertising for political or social causes be allowed to run paid ads about "feminism" especially while Equal Pay for Equal Work is such a hot-button political issue [1] all over Europe?

This is a theatre show of material almost a century old. It is a historical piece just like movies about the Nazi regime are not political but just art dealing with a troublesome period in history.

And I would not consider women's rights to be "a hot-button issue". That implies it's heavily contested which it is not. It's just a problem that needs fixing just like environmental pollution does.

The EU does this for good reason. Trump (in 2016) won in part because of a huge campaign organised on and aided by facebook. Sarah Wynn-Williams' book Careless People goes into detail on this. But feminism isn't a 'political' topic in the EU and the very act of labelling it political is a political move in itself.

Also, it would take a toxic manosphere American culture to even consider feminism "political". Women's rights are an established and uncontested (by mainstream politics) part of the EU.

Orange is not blocking it on my fiber yet but it is on my mobile connection.

The strange thing is I use the same DNS on both (which exits on my fiber connection, even when I'm on mobile), so they must be blocking it another way.

The order only went through on Friday so presumably the ISPs will take some time to catch up.

>Maybe not from the start, but definitely since the EU sunk its teeth into it. We can look forward to ID-controls for everything online, and monitoring of what we write.

Yes, they just made a big step in that direction by requiring age verification on social media for everyone :(

> Should anyone deviate from the EU leftist narrative they will be fined, disconnected, imprisoned or all three.

That is not happening though. But they are building the machinery to do things like this.
