I wouldn't say it's weird not to subscribe to Anthropic at all. We're in a thread specifically describing a good reason not to!

Any money out of my pocket for third-party AI would either go to highly subsidized services like Google's (I've gotten over $500 in API calls on a $20 subscription I paid $0 for as a student, which also includes GCP credits, CoLab credits, cloud storage, etc.), and once they reign that in and start pricing/offering realistically (Antigravity has been noticably chopped down already since I began using it) I'll switch to API calls from Chinese companies.

Qwen3.8-27b matches Opus 4.6's performance and is less than a 32GB download at 8-bit quantization. How would, could that disappear?

Even if you take it down, you can just torrent it.

As of today, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 or Kimi K3.

If you are bound to consumer-obtainable hardware, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next. If you are bound to consumer-accessible hardware, Qwen3.8-27b today and Qwen4-27b when it releases next week (Qwen models consistently punch far above their parameter size).

The UN was openly biased against apartheid South Africa as well.

For a bit more physical space, used laptops have the same and more.

I run a headless laptop as a server and it works great, and just sips power. It didn't have Ethernet built-in, so I just replaced the WiFi card with one and it worked just fine (and also let me panel mount the connector for a DIY 1U enclosure).

While I did not get it myself, I recently saw a business laptop I was hawking with 8GB of RAM and a relatively modern CPU sell for less than $50 on eBay. All that was wrong with it was a bad back panel; just some broken plastic which I wouldn't have been using regardless.

I could see myself running a whole rack of headless laptops in the future. It's more likely than me buying a single new Pi at these prices.

That's strange, our key cards to access the server room don't seem to work anymore, and the admin console to force-unlock it is down, too...

Not good for us if it gets banned domestically because the US can't compete in a free market.

I imagine it'd work the same as merging all the good-tasting foods to get an even tastier one

Well, yes, the comment is living in an alternate universe. It's a parable.

The interest isn't artificial; A lot of people (especially me) are just highly interested in this tech. I myself am working on a 2D variant meant for low-bandwidth environments to replace low-res pixel grid images.

You personally may not feel it, but there is a real, genuine interest, especially given how good it is at replicating photorealistic environments in realtime, relatively cheap (in comparison to NeRF). It's awesome.

Also, what would the ulterior motive be for someone to 'pump' this? There isn't a financial or clout-based motivation to do so. It's just interesting tech, which I believe we are all at least partly here for.

How many PoE adapters would it take to charge a Tesla?

Not sure how good of an idea a Steam Deck would be for this. If you can't access Wikipedia, I imagine a replacement for its unprotected glass screen would be harder to come by if you drop it.
