>Of all the options for "use money to make this go away so I can focus on the problem" paying $10 surcharge for doordash is by far the cheapest.

Exactly this. They know humans will likely pick the path of least resistance. And we are generally bad at problems that have compounding long term outcomes. They are essentially preying on our societal circumstances. My story: Brain will resist using energy for creative solution from within if external solution exists for $.

>And how many more times do we need to read this before we replace Web PKI with a system that isn't as completely insane?

You say this like it's easy and simple and we are simply not choosing to do so.

Right...but putting everything behind the great firewall doesn't solve the true problem. Which is these devices are shipping with garbage and no accountability. We'll break into your moat if that's what it truly takes, is my point.

>It's very difficult to have informed opinions on a black box with an ambiguous, ever-changing and nominally unbounded set of capabilities.

Hah, welcome to what it can feel like to manage people.

Nah, these are the same folks that have never watched earthlings.

If we made it so before one could eat meat of the animal, it had to personally kill and watch the animal die, we’d eat less meat.

It should be a requirement

You are highlighting their point. You are pointing to current culture and behavior. The very first sentence that you responded to points to that culture and says it's gonna need to change, if you'd like to keep your job.

People skills imo will always trump other skills. The best ideas never live because people don't know how to sell. And knowing and being very successful at selling requires that excellent story telling and human coordination.

How could they? The alternative starts to look like every router maintains complete "internet state"...which turns out isn't possible. Awareness is complex and expensive. And there are endless variables and "whys" to consider

yeah...it's certainly a grounding feeling for me.

Yeah it sucks. But it will always be a dance. And the folks that make the clients will always choose “best effort”. Sadly, we can only reduce clients decision so far before things break

Not since Clinton in the 90s. Could use another pull back on military spending like we did then

>What even is a “shared reality”? For example my mum and I could watch the exact same movie and showing at the cinema and still come away with a completely different opinion of it.

Exactly. The shared reality is the experience. You both were given the same opportunity to take in the same information. The different opinion is what comes out of the other side of the meat suit processing the experience.

Algo driven results changes the experience by changing what the user perceives. So there might never be a shared experience.

It's an interesting balance for a company to strike. Networking in general is one where the defaults are almost always lax. Why? Because the vast majority of support tickets for these companies are from people who don't know what they are doing and don't have a desire to understand. They "just want it to work."

But the people with the actual desire and understanding aren't using the defaults anyway. And the people who don't want to understand will just turn things off and "just get it working."

The only way out of this is extreme accountability and intentional design from person implementing the technology.

Mmm yeah...just straight releasing the water isn't ideal. But of course, it's free! And that's what society optimizes for, sadly.
