I did find this example, however:
> "My brother is poor, and I want to look as much like him as I can, else he may feel distant from me."
From Mill on the Floss, published by George Eliot in 1860.
Google ngrams shows 'else' being used fairly consistently up until about 1880 after which it gradually declines. In the 2000s it rapidly picks up, probably because of the programming influence.
Looking at the actual texts, there are a few German ones listed. Plenty with "someone else", "nothing else". Quite a lot with "or else", for example: "Yea , but what am I ? a scholar, or a schoolmaster, or else some youth".
Europe has plenty of other more nimble alternatives emerging. Not that SpaceX care, they are removing themselves from the market entirely.
One is that Hubble's mirror is not expected to burn up on re-entry and may therefore hit the ground.
How is this managed with similar spy satellites? Presumably the problem is more acute, because not only do you need to avoid killing someone, but you also want to avoid any chance of falling on hostile territory. Are they actively steered into known parts of the ocean? Or does something else happen (one suggestion with Hubble was actually to fire a missile at it just before entry in order to break the mirror in space).
