I think in a state with a single boomtown(Seattle) this goes doubly true. Productive and competent people with agency opt for tech or tech adjacent vs local/county/state government. Seems it will continue provided the cost/benefit ratio of policies in Olympia don't begin to diminish the perceived return on big tech work in Seattle.

For such a tech and adv. manufacturing dependent state, WA certainly has pushed some conspicuous and myopic regulations since 2016. With the coming income tax creep, seems we’re marching towards the bloat of California sans any of the benefits(consumer data laws, digital/real ID, etc).

Comments like these, aside from the brilliant technical answers and dives, really highlight the value of HN. What a lovely Sunday read I shall have—I’ve been getting distracted by the phone and world news. Reading Baudillard and Debord should help reestablish what’s noise and what isn’t.

Thank you.

I'm not arguing the point you're making. I'm saying that these discussions on these sorts of things on chat boards populated by privileged western nerds and conspicuous progressives have little merit and are merely a reflection of biases/ego of the privileged western nerd when put up against the lived experiences of people in Venezuela and neighboring states.

Need to get this comment to the top.

>this was probably a combination of 3/75 Ranger Regiment and/or RRC, Delta/CAG, 24th STS, and probably 1 or more SEAL teams based on the sub movement.

If you're going to flaunt nerd speak then just say JSOC.

Here's a trick I've learnt to get an authentic view of events like these, a nice way to parse through the keyboard warrior and ivory tower voices and noise is to hear what Venezuelans, the millions of Venezuelan migrants, and the citizens of neighboring countries who've had to reckon with the legacy of Chavez think about this. You can extend this to anything really with good results.

No valuable insight will be gleaned from chat boards and reddit in the immediate aftermath of these sorts of events.

Dr. Levin’s work is so fascinating. Glad to see his work referenced. If anyone wishes to learn more while idle or commuting, check out Lex Friedman’s podcast episode with him linked above

I hope someone much smarter than I answers this. I’ve been noticing an uptick platonic and neo-platonic discourse in the zeitgeist and am wondering if we’re converging on something profound.

I’m really curious about the amount of screen time and news/social media consumption of these groups. I assume it’s a couple standard deviations above what’s healthy.

It’s absolutely insightful for adults as well. Especially when paired with the other horsemen of the attention apocalypse “Dopamine Nation”, “Irresistible”, and “The Shallows”.

Returned my treatment of the internet from “the thing” to just another tool.

It can be both. The further away I get from social media and its singular narratives where it’s always “this ONE thing” form of causeality, the more I realize the mechanisms and causes can be multimodal and compound upon on another.

I(1992) keep it because my younger family members(Gen Z>) refuse to use anything else to communicate.
